Vinko Jelovac

Vinko Jelovac (born September 18, 1948 in Pazin , Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav basketball player who was world champion in 1970 and second in the 1976 Olympics, as well as later Croatian basketball coach .

The 2.08 m tall Jelovac from the KK Union Olimpija from Ljubljana and his club were Yugoslav champions in 1970.

With the Yugoslav national team , he reached the finals at the European Championships in Italy in 1969 , where the USSR team won . In 1970 the World Cup took place in Yugoslavia. There was a final round in Ljubljana, in which each of the six teams qualified from the preliminary round as well as the Yugoslav hosts played against each other. The Yugoslavs lost the last game against the Soviet team, but still won gold in front of Brazil and the Soviet Union, which each had two defeats. At the European Championship in Germany in 1971 there was another real final, which the Soviet team won against the Yugoslavs.

In 1972 at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, the Yugoslavs took third place in Group B behind the Soviet Union and Italy in the preliminary round . With victories over Czechoslovakia and Puerto Rico , the Yugoslavs reached fifth place. Jelovac was in nine games, in the last game against Puerto Rico he got 20 points, his worst result was 9 points against the Soviet Union.

At the European Championships in Spain in 1973 , Yugoslavia won the final against the Spaniards who had defeated the defending champions from the Soviet Union in the semifinals. In 1974 there was the group system again at the World Cup in San Juan , six teams from the preliminary round as well as host Puerto Rico and defending champion Yugoslavia were set for the final round. In the end, the Soviet Union, the Yugoslavs, and the United States were each defeated. Since the victory of the Soviet team over the team from the USA was the highest victory of the games among themselves, the Soviet Union won the title before the Yugoslavs and the United States. The 1975 European basketball championship took place in Yugoslavia. There was a final round with six teams, in which the Yugoslavs achieved five victories and thus became European champions before the Soviet Union.

In 1976 at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, the Yugoslavs were second in the preliminary round behind the team from the United States. After the semi-final victory of the Yugoslavs over the team from the Soviet Union, the Yugoslavs met again in the final against the United States and lost 74:95. Jelovac was only used in six games and only scored 18 points in this tournament. In 1977, at the end of his international career, Jelovac was once again at the European Championship in Belgium . There was another knockout round, in the final the Yugoslavs won against the Soviet team.

After his playing career, Jelovac worked as a coach at KK Gradine Pula (1993–1994), KK Osijek (1994–1996), Maccabi Tel Aviv (1997–1998), KK Cibona Zagreb (1999–2000) and KK Split ( 2001-2002).

In 1973 and 1974 Vinko Jelevac was voted Slovenian Sportsman of the Year . In 2012 he was inducted into the Hram slavnih slovenskih športnikov (Hall of Fame for Slovenian Athletes).
