Vinod Ganpat Kambli (born January 18, 1972 in Bombay , India ) is a retired Indian cricketer . In addition to his career in the Indian national team , he now appears as a commentator and expert on cricket broadcasts for several TV stations. He also took part in several reality shows and appeared as an actor in Bollywood productions.

childhood and education

Kambli grew up in Bombay and went to Shardashram Vidyamandir School . He achieved his first notoriety through an appearance in the semifinals of the Indian school championship, the Harris Shield . Against their opponent St Xavier's High School , Kambli and his teammate Sachin Tendulkar , who later became the captain and one of the best batsman of the Indian national team , were expected to be the dominant batsman. St Xavier's initially managed to remove two batsman before Tendulkar joined Kambli on the beat. By the evening Kambli 182 and Tendulkar 192 runs and their coach, who could not be there on the second day, instructed the two batsman to make the declaration in the morning and thus go on to bowling. However, the two ignored the instruction and attacked until lunch. By then, Kambli had achieved 349 and Tendulkar 326 runs. Thereupon they called their coach and asked to be allowed to linger at the stroke, but the latter ordered the immediate declaration and the two players followed the instruction. The 664 runs achieved together in the partnership were later identified as a world record and only broken in 2006.

Cricket career

Three years after the world record in 1989 , he made his debut for Bombay in the Indian Deadline Class competition, the Ranji Trophy . He scored six runs from his first ball. From 1991 he was selected for the Indian national team, but initially only in the ODI team . His first use was at the Wills Trophy 1991/92 against Pakistan . In spring he was nominated for the 1992 Cricket World Cup , which was disappointing for him and the Indian team. So he was nominated again for the next home tour against England in the next year, where he scored his first Century (100 runs in one innings ) with 100 not out in the first ODI . The other ODIs were less successful, but secured him the qualification for the test team . In the third test of the series, he managed a double century with 224. He repeated this on the following tour against Zimbabwe where he managed 227 runs. In the summer tour against Sri Lanka , he won two Centuries during the test series, but the ODI series was more mixed.

From then on, after the strong start of his international career, he was no longer able to build on these achievements. He was also nominated for the test and ODI team in the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons . This changed at the beginning of the 1995/96 season when he was no longer considered for the test team after the tour against New Zealand . Nevertheless, he was considered for the Cricket World Cup 1996 , where he succeeded in his second and last ODI-Century against Zimbabwe . After India collapsed against Sri Lanka in his answer in the semifinals in Calcutta , he was on the bat when the game was abandoned due to crowd riots.

In the summer he was not nominated for the tour in England . This only took place again for the Singer World Series 1996 in Sri Lanka and against Pakistan in Canada in the fall of the year. After these missions he was removed from the team again. Until the following, he was only nominated for multi-nation tournaments, although he was not in the squad for the next World Cup . His last assignment at an ODI was at the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy 2000/01 in the United Arab Emirates . In total, he had made nine comebacks on the ODI team during his career.

For the 2002/03 season he moved to South Africa and played for Boland . In the 2004/05 season he was also used for the last time for Mumbai and has not played actively since. He officially resigned from international cricket in 2009, and from national cricket in 2011.

Away from cricket

After his international career, he played in a total of three Bollywood productions. He has also appeared on reality TV formats on Indian television. He is currently appearing increasingly in the Indian media as a commentator and expert on cricket broadcasts.
