Visakhapatnam ( Telugu : విశాఖపట్నం ; also Vishakhapatnam or Vizag ) is a port city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh with 1.7 million inhabitants. The city is one of the fastest growing centers in India and a special economic zone .
The city can be used as a starting point for excursions to the Borra Caves , known beyond India's borders, or the Araku Valley .
economy
Visakhapatnam benefits significantly from the special economic zone and is connected to the free trade zone 25 kilometers south of the city by a railway line. Raw materials such as iron and manganese are exported through the city , and there is also a strong industry in the city. There is, among other things, a steel mill , an oil refinery and other petrochemical plants. Shipbuilding in the city's shipyards has also been an important industry in the coastal city for a long time.
port
The port of Visakhapatnam is an important economic factor for the region and one of the largest in India. The natural harbor has been expanded several times in recent years in order to be able to handle several large ships at the same time. Panamax-class ships can also moor in the Visakhapatnam port. The port is also used militarily as a base for the eastern naval command of the Indian armed forces . The port has a 200-kilometer rail network that was used to transport goods with a total weight of 37.56 million tons in the 2009/2010 fiscal year.
culture and education
With Andhra University , founded in 1926 , Visakhapatnam has an important university. In the city there is a submarine museum due to the importance of the city for navy and seafaring .
