Vitalij Kowaljow (born 1968 in Cherkassy , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian opera singer .

Life

Kowaljow studied at the Moscow Theological Institute and then continued his studies at the University of Music in Bern with Elisabeth Glauser and at the Swiss Opera Studio in Biel . In 1999 he won the Placido Domingo Operalia Competition in Puerto Rico and the 39th Verdi Competition in Busseto. At the Biel Solothurn Theater he appeared in various roles, for example in the title role in Verdi's Attila .

During the 2006/2007 season, Kowaljow sang Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem with both the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of James Conlon . This was followed by King Philip II in Tokyo, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte at the Colorado Opera, Pimen in Boris Godunow in San Diego and again Sarastro at the Metropolitan Opera . Up to the summer of 2007 there was a CD recording as Colline in La Bohème with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón in Munich, Banquo in Macbeth at the Washington National Opera , Kaspar in Der Freischütz in Hamburg and a CD recording of Leoncavallos I Medici as Francesco Pazzi with Plácido Domingo .

In the 2007/2008 season Vitalij Kowaljow made his debut at the Vienna State Opera as Raimondo in I puritani , at the Chicago Lyric Opera as Gremin in Eugen Onegin . He returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Ramfis in Aida and as Oroveso in Norma and to the Bavarian State Opera as Zaccaria in Nabucco . In 2008 he also took part in Robert Dornhelm's film adaptation of Puccini's La Bohème with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón as Colline.

In the 2008/2009 season he appeared at the San Francisco Opera as Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra and as Pimen in Boris Godunow . He also made his debut with the role of Wotan in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre in the new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner , directed by Achim Freyer at the Los Angeles Opera. Later that season concerts and a CD recording of Tchaikovsky's Jolanthe at the Baden-Baden Festival under the direction of Valeri Gergijew will follow .

In the 2010/2011 season Vitalij Kowaljow sang the role of Wotan in Richard Wagner's Die Walküre in the season opening of La Scala in Milan under the direction of Daniel Barenboim . In the summer of 2011, he made a CD recording as Commendatore in Mozart's Don Giovanni under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin .

In 2013 he gave the Marchese di Calatrava and Padre Guardiano in the premiere of La forza del destino at the Bavarian State Opera .

Kowaljow has 40 major opera roles in his repertoire, with which he is guest at all major opera houses around the world. These include King Philip in Don Carlos (New National Theater Tokyo, September 2006), Zaccaria in Nabucco (Bavarian State Opera Munich 2011, Arena di Verona 2011) and Ramfis in Aida (Arena di Verona, 2005 and 2006), Procida in I vespri siciliani (Opéra National de Paris, 2003 and Washington National Opera 2005), Padre Guardiano in La forza del destino (Metropolitan Opera and Bavarian State Opera 2006) and Walter in Luisa Miller (Metropolitan Opera 2006, La Scala 2012).

Further roles are Wotan in Das Rheingold (Los Angeles 2009, 2010; Dresden 2010), Wotan in Die Walküre (Los Angeles 2009, 2010; Dresden 2010, La Scala 2010, Salzburg 2017) and Der Wanderer in Siegfried (Los Angeles 2009, 2010 ), Kaspar in Der Freischütz (New York, Carnegie Hall, 2006), Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Los Angeles Opera 2006, Turin 2011), Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte (Metropolitan Opera 2007), Pimen in Boris Godunow (San Diego Opera, 2006 and San Francisco Opera, 2008) and Gremin in Eugen Onegin (Chicago Lyric Opera, 2008).
