Vladislovas Česiūnas

Vladislovas Česiūnas (born March 15, 1940 in Vyšnialaukiai , Rajongemeinde Jonava ) is a Lithuanian sprint canoeist . He won one Olympic medal and six Canoe World Championships medals in his career. He later became known for his role in the "Česiūnas Affair" when he defected to Germany during the 1979 World Cup in Duisburg . He was then arrested by KGB agents and deported to the Soviet Union for his “misconduct”.

Life

In 1968 he graduated from the technical center for rail transport in Vilnius and in 1980 he graduated from the Lithuanian Sports Institute in Kaunas . From 1979 to 2003 he worked as a trainer, from 1981 to 1989 in the "Dinamo" school. From 1977 to 1981 he was the director of the Vilnius Children's Sports School. From 1990 he worked at the Vilnius Customs Office.
