The World Cyber Games (WCG) is a former E-Sports -Event, held annually. They were brought into being with the support of the Korean company Samsung in 2000 under the name WCG Challenge . Between 2001 and 2013 the event was called World Cyber Games and took place annually in October or November at different venues.
The program included six to nine PC games each year that are suitable as esports titles. The two game series FIFA and StarCraft , which were on the program at every edition of the World Cyber Games, were long-running hits. Other popular esports titles included Counter-Strike and Warcraft III . The total prize money was usually a five-digit dollar amount for each discipline. Between 2003 and 2011, however, competitions were also held on the XBox or XBox360 console and on the mobile phone.
The number of participants per country was limited and the size of the respective selection also depended on the sponsors of the individual WCG organizations. The number of national players in a nation varied between one and 25 people. With more than 20 players, Germany was regularly one of the strongest represented nations and is second in the all-time medal table. Most recently, 72 nations took part in the preliminary rounds for the World Cyber Games.
Since 2005 there has also been a European version of the WCG with the WCG 2005 Samsung Euro Championship (SEC). It took place at CeBIT in Hanover . In 2006 the WCG Asian Championship and the WCG Pan-American Championship were also added .
In 2014, three similarly designed events took place, which see themselves as successors to the World Cyber Games: the World eSports Championships , the World Cyber Arena and the World eSports Championship Games .
In 2019, after a break of several years in Xi'an, there was a new edition.
