history

The German reparations after the First World War prompted numerous insurance companies to terminate the existing liability contracts of the cities and municipalities in order to enable new contracts to be concluded at higher amounts. Therefore, at the beginning of 1921 , the local council of the city of Nürtingen submitted an application to the Württemberg Association of Cities calling for the cities and municipalities to join forces to establish their own liability insurance. Under the leadership of its managing director Gottlieb Frank, the Württemberg Association of Cities thereupon founded the Württemberg community insurance association on April 13, 1921 in the small meeting room of the Stuttgart city hall . The founding members included the mayors and mayors of the cities of Aalen , Geislingen an der Steige , Göppingen , Heidenheim an der Brenz , Heilbronn , Ludwigsburg , Mühlacker , Reutlingen , Saulgau and Ulm , the managing director of the city council was appointed to the association's board. Business operations began on May 1, 1921, and liability insurance contracts were offered to municipal and church associations and institutions. From October 1921, insurance against burglary, fire and embezzlement was added to the offer, so that by 1922 more than 1700 insurance contracts could be concluded. The insurance offer was extended to private customers in 1925.

In 1927 the association moved its headquarters from the town hall to Etzelstraße 27, in 1954 it moved to Panoramastraße 31, and in 1976 the current headquarters were opened at Österreichischer Platz in Stuttgart .

WGV is primarily active as a direct insurer without a full-time sales force . Customer contact takes place by post, telephone and the Internet. In addition to the head office in Stuttgart, there was a branch in Ravensburg from 1988 . In 1998 this moved to the Service and Damage Center Bodensee-Oberschwaben. Further service centers were later established in Ulm (2003), Augsburg (2004), Dresden (2006), Leipzig (2006), Frankfurt am Main (2007), Nuremberg (2007), Munich (2007), Düsseldorf (2008), Essen (2008 ) and Cologne (2008) opened. The service center in Stuttgart was reopened in 2008/2009. Direct sales in Württemberg and in Bavarian Swabia are supported by agents who work primarily part-time.

In 2019, more than 5.35 million contracts were managed by the 1006 employees of the WGV insurance group.
