Wairauite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of the elements, more precisely the metals and intermetallic compounds . It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system with the chemical composition CoFe and forms idiomorphic , cubic or octahedral grains up to 7 · 4 μm in size. The mineral is very magnetic .
Etymology and history
Wairauit was first found in 1965 by GA Challis and JVP Long in the type locality , the valley of the Wairau River on New Zealand's South Island . It is named after this too.
classification
In the Strunz system , Wairauit is counted among the metals and intermetallic compounds, a subgroup of the elements. After the 8th edition it forms a group together with iron , kamacite and manganese . In the 9th edition it forms a subgroup of the iron- chromium family with chromium feride and ferchromide .
In the Dana systematics , with iron, kamacite, taenite , tetrataenite , avaruit and nickel, it forms a subgroup (iron-nickel group) of the metallic elements apart from the platinum metals .
Education and Locations
Wairauite is formed in lizardite during serpentinization under reducing , low-sulfur conditions . It is associated with chromite , magnetite , awaruit and copper .
In addition to the type locality, finds from the Canadian provinces of Northwest Territories and British Columbia , Ningqiang in the Chinese province of Shaanxi , Balangero in the metropolitan city of Turin ( Italy ), the prefecture of Ehime in Japan , Bashkortostan in Russia and the US state of Oregon are known.
Crystal structure
Wairauit crystallizes in the cubic crystal system with the lattice parameter a = 2.86 Å and one formula units per unit cell . The exact space group is not known.
