The Catholic pilgrimage church of All Saints in the Scheppach district of Jettingen-Scheppach in the Swabian district of Günzburg is a pilgrimage church in the Swabian Baroque style . The pilgrimage was first mentioned in writing in 1395. The Lords of Knöringen , a local noble family, are considered to be the supporters of the expansion of the church. The largest renovation work took place in the 18th century, with renovations in the middle of the 20th century.

Building history

At first there was only a small chapel east of Scheppach on a wooded hill. The Lords of Knöringen supported and financed the extension of the branch church . The nave was renewed in 1732 by the builder Simpert Kraemer . This was followed in 1753-55 by the choir and the tower octagon and again the nave by Joseph Dossenberger the Younger in 1770/71. Finally, the church was consecrated in 1779. The walls of the nave are divided on the inside and outside by pilasters . The tower with a helmet dates from the 19th century. The flat ceiling is decorated with stitch caps over individual pilasters.

Furnishing

The style of the furnishings is “folksong-like, cheerful rococo ”. The corners of the wide nave been rounded, in Westwerk is a curly dual empore . The fresco decoration was applied by Johann Baptist Enderle in 1770/71 . These ceiling and wall frescoes are among the masterpieces of Enderle. The main fresco, the All Saints Heaven in the nave, depicts the adoration of the Holy Trinity by the angels and saints, hence the name of the church. The individual groups are each located on balls of clouds. An inscription reads: "Sit Trino, sit uni Deo sicut in Principio, sit semper Gloria" (To the triune one God be in the beginning, always be glory). The fresco is surrounded by three small cartouches .

The other thematic cycle of frescoes in the nave is made up of the youth of Jesus Christ . A renovation of the frescoes and the entire church took place in 1969. The fresco above the choir arch shows the Annunciation with four cartouches. There is a signature "JB Enderle 1770" here. On the south side of the nave there is still a stucco pulpit . There are many small figures in the choir, such as those of Saint Veronica or Anna herself .

Altars

The high altar , built onto the end wall of the choir, has a column architecture that extends into the vaulted ceiling. In its center hangs a Gothic crucifix , which together with the God the Father figure and the Holy Spirit dove represent the Trinity. The coat of arms of the Freyberg-Haldenwang rule hangs above the altar. At two further altars, each on the north and south wall between the pilasters at the beginning of the choir, which are placed across the corner, one encounters the altarpieces of St. Joseph and the bust of St. Aloisius to the north and St. Leonard and the bust of St. Francis Xavier to the north . The altars in the nave are painted dark brown. The motifs are Johannes Nepomuk on the left and St. Francis by Johann Georg Lederle on the right .
