The Walsall FC (officially: Walsall Football Club ) - also known as The Saddlers - is an English football club from Walsall . He played again in the third-rate EFL League One from the 2007/08 season until relegation in 2019 .
history
Walsall FC was founded in 1888 as Walsall Town Swifts through a merger of the two local clubs Walsall Swifts and Walsall Town , both founded in the second half of the 1870s . It has had its current name since 1895. After several years in the non-league area, the club was accepted into the Football League in 1892 , from which it had to retire in 1895. A year later he was re-accepted into professional football. After the club had to retire again in 1901, they only returned with the formation of the Third Division North back into the Football League, which has been a member since then. Since then, the team has mainly played in third and fourth class.
In 1961, the club rose to the second division for the first time for two years . The greatest success was reaching the semi-finals in the League Cup in 1984. At that time, Walsall had defeated Arsenal 2-1 in the fourth round . In the semifinals they initially achieved a 2-2 win against Liverpool , but lost the second leg against the eventual winners with 0-2. 25 years after relegation, the club came back to the second division for a year in 1988 and a good decade later they played in the second highest division in 1999/00 and 2001 to 2004, which was now called the Football League First Division . At the time, on February 11, 2003 in the league game against Wolverhampton Wanderers with 11,037 spectators, the best visit in the club's history was recorded. In 2006 Walsall was last in Football League One , the third highest division since 2004, and was relegated to fourth division. There Walsall won first place and rose again. In 2015, the club played on the occasion of the final of the Football League Trophy for the first time at Wembley Stadium , the game against Bristol City ended in a 2-0 defeat.
