Walter Frey (politician, 1909)

Walter Frey (* 15. January 1909 in Lugau , † 7. June 1966 in Remscheid ) was a German politician of the SPD and from 1948 to 1961 Mayor of the city of Remscheid.

Life

Frey acquired on the secondary school , the high school . He then attended the Higher German Technical School , where he was trained as an operating assistant. After a time as a production engineer, the Remscheid stamping and enamel works took over as operations manager and co-owner .

Frey joined the SPD and the ÖTV in 1945 . From January to October 1946 he was a member of the Remscheid City Council appointed by the British occupying forces. On November 15, 1948, he was elected Lord Mayor of Remscheid. During his tenure as Lord Mayor, which ended on April 10, 1961, he was also a city councilor. In the first federal election in 1949 , Frey ran for the German Bundestag on the state list of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia , but won no mandate. In the state elections in 1954 , he was directly elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament through constituency 50 (Remscheid) , to which he belonged until 1958. The Landtag elected him a member of the second Federal Assembly , which in 1954 re-elected Theodor Heuss as Federal President.

Shortly before his death in 1966 he was awarded the X-ray plaque of the city of Remscheid. The Walter Frey Foundation , established in 1954, is named after him.
