Gustav Flohr (born November 12, 1895 in Remscheid ; † February 18, 1965 there ) was a German politician.

Life

Gustav Flohr initially worked as a plumber and welder and later also in the commercial sector. From 1914 to 1918 he served in the First World War.

Since 1910 he was a member of the German Metalworkers' Association and the SPD . In 1917 Flohr first joined the USPD , with whose left wing he switched to the KPD in 1920 . He was involved in the suppression of the Kapp Putsch . From 1926 he was the city ​​councilor of Remscheid. Later he headed the local branch of the Revolutionary Trade Union Opposition . He was a member of the Reich leadership of the Kampfbund against fascism . In 1932/1933 he was a member of the Reichstag . After the National Socialists came to power, Gustav Flohr was placed in protective custody in March 1933taken. He was therefore imprisoned in the concentration camps in Brauweiler, Börgermoor, Brandenburg, Lichtenburg and in the central prison in Halle in 1933/34. After a period of pre-trial detention in Ulmer Höh prison and in Düsseldorf-Dehrendorf, Flohr was sentenced to eight months in prison in April 1934 for prohibited possession of weapons. After his release in spring 1935, he emigrated to the Netherlands at the end of January 1936, where he worked illegally for the KPD.

From 1936 until he was wounded in 1938, Flohr fought in the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War . He was evacuated to France and interned there for public propaganda . He was later used for forced labor on the Atlantic Wall , from which he fled in 1943. Gustav Flohr was an officer of the Resistance , most recently he was an operations officer in the division headquarters in the Saône-et-Loire department . In 1945 he returned to Germany.

Gustav Flohr was Lord Mayor of Remscheid from May to November 1946. In protest against the Stalinization of his party, he resigned from the KPD in 1948. Most recently he was chairman of the works council of Diehl KG in Remscheid.
