Walter Kohler (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter Kohler (born May 1, 1903 in Schönbronn ; † January 28, 1945 in Stuttgart ) was a German art and glass painter and co-founder of the Stuttgart Secession .

Career

The son of a Protestant pastor studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy with professors Robert Poetzelberger and Christian Adam Landenberger . During an interim semester in Berlin , he came into contact with Expressionism . The windows in the Evangelical Church in Gerhausen with depictions of the Passion are among his earliest ecclesiastical works. In 1940/41 he created the choir windows in the Degerloch church (today Michaelskirche), where his father was pastor from 1922 to 1934. He designed church windows in Göppingen , Obertal (Baiersbronn) and Sindelfingen , murals in Reutlingen and in the Protestant church in Hohenstaufen (1934–1940).

Walter Kohler was commissioned to design three twenty-two meter high choir windows for the Moritzkirche in Halle an der Saale. The clients were enthusiastic and asked him for designs for the planned new windows for Naumburg Cathedral . The outbreak of World War II prevented this work from being carried out. Walter Kohler was drafted and served as a soldier in France. During the last heavy air raid on Stuttgart he was killed on the night of January 29, 1945.

His son Wolf-Dieter Kohler restored most of his father's windows after the war, repaired war damage and designed additional windows himself (Philipp-Matthäus-Hahn-Kirche in Albstadt- Onstmettingen , Martinskirche in Neuffen ).
