The Rülzheim station was a train station in the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Rülzheim . It was put into operation on July 25, 1876 with the extension of the Schifferstadt – Germersheim line to Wörth . The address of the station, whose former reception building is a listed building, is Bahnhofstrasse 6 .

As part of the integration of the Germersheim – Wörth section into the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn network , it was replaced by a stop called Rülzheim Bahnhof , some 300 meters further north . This belongs to station category 6 and has two platform tracks . Both the former train station and today's stop are in the network area of the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV) and belong to tariff zone 565. In the course of a transitional tariff agreed in 1996, however, cards of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN) are also recognized.

location

The station was on the northern edge of the settlement of Rülzheim. The local Bahnhofstrasse , which is identical to Landesstrasse 493 , runs parallel to the railway line , which runs from northeast to southwest in this section . In the west and north, agriculturally used space adjoins the station area. The railway line itself comes from the north and goes around the community in an elongated S-curve, in the middle of which both the former train station and today's stop are located. The latter is located around 300 meters further northeast directly on the state road 540 to Bellheim .

history

Railway projects around Rülzheim

Originally it was planned to start operating a railway line in north-south direction within the Palatinate (Bavaria) from the Rheinschanze via Lauterbourg to Strasbourg , which should compete with the Mannheim – Basel line planned by Baden . However, this was postponed in favor of the Palatinate Ludwigshafen - Bexbach, which opened between 1847 and 1849 . In the period that followed, discussions took place as to whether a route along the mountains from Neustadt via Landau to Wissembourg or a route along the Rhine via Speyer , Germersheim and Wörth was more urgent and desirable. Since the military in particular preferred a route on the edge of the Palatinate Forest , one in the form of the Maximiliansbahn Neustadt – Wissembourg was preferred.

In the course of efforts to link the Maximiliansbahn with the Baden capital Karlsruhe , several personalities from Rheinzabern and its neighboring communities tried to route the route via Offenbach , Herxheim , Leimersheim and Leopoldshafen . In neighboring Rülzheim, this was to be linked to the Schifferstadt – Speyer branch line , which was opened at the same time as the Ludwigsbahn and which would be linked through accordingly. However, these plans competed with the Winden – Karlsruhe railway line , which was eventually given preference and opened in 1864. In the same year the Speyer route was extended to Germersheim .

Also in 1864, a local committee from Rülzheim tried to extend the line that now ended in Germersheim to Wörth , which resulted in a first draft shortly afterwards. However, the location of the Rheinzabern train station was disputed. One variant provided for this east of the municipality, another, however, in the west. The neighboring communities, who wanted him close by, also got involved in the debate. The committee itself advocated the location in the west on March 30, 1872, before it was finally decided on July 7, 1872. On July 25, 1876, the connection of the line to Wörth including the Rülzheim station was finally opened.

Further development

In 1922 the station was incorporated into the newly established Ludwigshafen Reich Railway Directorate . In the course of its dissolution on April 1, 1937, he moved to the area of responsibility of the Mainz management.

The German Federal Railways was divided the station after the Second World War in the Bundesbahndirektion Mainz one, they all railway lines within the newly created state of Rhineland-Palatinate allotted. In 1971 the station came under the responsibility of its Karlsruhe counterpart in the course of the dissolution of the Mainz management. In the 1990s the station was dismantled to a stopping point . In mid-December 2010 it was integrated into the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn network.

Reception building

The former station building is a brick building with stylistic elements from late classicism and neo-renaissance . The listed building also has a three-story tower . It is no longer of any importance for rail operations. In 1984 the choir "Einigkeit" bought the reception building with a 900 m² property and converted it into a singers' home by 1986. A restaurant was set up in the former counter on the first floor, the rehearsal room on the upper floor, an apartment on the top floor, an office with archive on the tower floor and a wine bar in the vaulted cellar. A beer garden was set up in the outdoor area, and a number of roofs and storage facilities were later built. In 1985 the building was listed as a historical monument. In 2018, the association sold the building to a private citizen from Rülzheim. The former goods shed is also still there and was restored in the 2000s .
