Walter Schweidler

Walter Rudolf Schweidler (born September 15, 1957 in Wassertrüdingen ) is a German philosopher .

Life

Walter Schweidler taught philosophy at the Ruhr University Bochum from 2000 to 2009. Before that he was professor at the Pedagogical University Weingarten from 1992 to 1997 and at the University of Dortmund from 1997 to 2000. Since 2009 he has held the chair for philosophy at the Catholic University Eichstätt . He is a student of Robert Spaemann , whose assistant he was at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1985 to 1992 . In addition to studying philosophy, catholic theology and political science , he completed a law degree , which he completed in 1990 with the first state examination at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. From 1983 to 1989 he ran the oldest private student residence in Munich, the Newman House on Kaulbachstrasse. After saying goodbye, he went to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis as a visiting professor for a semester . In the following years he worked on his habilitation thesis Geistesmacht und Menschenrecht , which he completed in 1992 and which was published by Alber Verlag in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1994. The habilitation process was completed in July 1993 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. His dissertation The Overcoming of Metaphysics , which was published by Klett-Cotta in 1987, has been translated into Japanese and French. His master's thesis, Wittgenstein's Concept of Philosophy, was published in 1983 by Alber Verlag. An Italian translation was published in Florence in 2004. Various contributions on the subject of metaphysics and the critique of metaphysics were published in 2008 in the volume Das Uneinholbaren bei Alber.

In Dortmund and Bochum, Schweidler taught primarily in the field of practical philosophy , in particular political and legal philosophy . The underlying research resulted in the book Der gute Staat , which was published by Reclam in 2002 and later in the second edition by Springer, as well as in the book On Human Dignity , published by Springer in 2012 . In the area of bioethics , Schweidler took part in projects of the Volkswagen Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service for academic rebuilding in Southeast Europe from 2004 to 2011. The starting point was a DFG project on intercultural bioethics under the direction of Heiner Roetz , which took place in the Ruhr -Universität Bochum started in 2002. His main research interests are contemporary and modern approaches to ethics and political philosophy ; Legal philosophy and theory of human rights ; Phenomenology , the philosophy of Heidegger in the context of the main currents of the 20th century ; Metaphysics and metaphysics criticism; Intercultural philosophy and bioethics . The question of what is philosophy and what is philosophical thinking runs through all works.

Schweidler contributed to the program of the Catholic University of Eichstätt by organizing the International Symposium Christianity and Philosophy 2012 with Jean-Luc Marion, the conference Gabe und Gemeinwohl 2013 and the master class with Marion 2016. To mark the 500th anniversary of Descartes' dream experiences there , he held the international conference Scientiae mirabilis fundamenta on Descartes reception in Germany from 17 to 16 in 2019 in Neuburg an der Donau together with the Center d'études cartésiennes of the Sorbonne and its director Vincent Carraud 20th century. Since 1996, Schweidler has been publishing the series West-Eastern Paths of Thinking at Academia Verlag Sankt Augustin and now at Nomos Verlag Baden-Baden .

Visiting professor or teaching and research stays led Schweidler 1989 to the University of Minnesota, 1994/95 to the University of Salzburg , 1996 at the University of Freiburg , 1997 at the Macquarie University in Sydney, in 1998 at the University of Kyoto , 2002 at the University of California at Berkeley (Graduate Theological Union), 2017, 2018 and 2019 to Sichuan University in Chengdu and 2020 to Manoa University in Honolulu and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

After meeting Marco Maria Olivetti in 2000, Schweidler grew into the group of phenomenologists united in the Roman Colloquio Castelli. The founder Julius T. Fraser accepted him into the International Society for the Study of Time, to whose International Council he has been a member since 2016. The collaboration with the Hermann and Marianne Straniak Foundation enabled him to hold a number of international symposia on the philosophical exchange between East Asian, mainly Buddhist, and Western thinkers between 1996 and 2008.
