Waltraud Hagenlocher (born January 29, 1945 in Renningen ; † January 26, 2012 ) was a German disabled athlete .

life and career

Hagenlocher grew up with five siblings, attended elementary school in her hometown and then completed an apprenticeship as a retail saleswoman . In 1966, at the age of 21, she suffered a sudden paraplegia of unknown origin, so that she could no longer work and retrained to become a technical draftsman . Hagenlocher began with sporting activities and took part in the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv in the shot put (eighth place), over 60 meters (ninth place), javelin throw (22nd), club throw (25th) and precision throw (46th) . In June 1969, she was diagnosed with bone cancer and amputated her left leg up to the hip. After the rehabilitation, Hagenlocher resumed her training in Bad Wildbad .

At the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg , she won the silver medal with the 4 x 40 meter relay around Rita Laux , Martina Tschötschel and Elke Wenzel and also took the shot put and javelin throw (fourth place each) and pentathlon (seventh place) Place), in the discus throw (eighth place) and in the slalom (ninth place). Four years later, at the 1976 Summer Paralympics in Toronto , the German won five medals: Hagenlocher won the silver medal in the shot put, javelin throw and pentathlon, the bronze medal in the discus throw, and in wheelchair speed driving over 60 meters she was eliminated after the preliminary round. She also took part in archery competitions and won the silver medal in the Short Metric Round behind her compatriot S. Battran. With the mixed team, she came third out of three participants in the same discipline, so no medal was awarded.

In the pentathlon of shot put, javelin throw, discus throw, swimming and wheelchair speed driving, Hagenlocher won the only Paralympic gold of her career at the 1980 Summer Paralympics in Arnhem . She also won silver in the shot put and the bronze medal together with the 4 x 60 meter relay around Errol Marklein , S. Roelli and C. Zeyher. In the javelin throw she came in eighth, in the discus throw in ninth place, while she did not get beyond the preliminary rounds over 60, 200 and 400 meters. At her last Summer Paralympic Games in 1984 in New York City and Stoke Mandeville , Hagenlocher won silver in the pentathlon and two bronze medals in the discus throw and the shot put. She also took part in the competitions in the javelin throw (fourth place) and over 100, 200 and 400 meters (each from the preliminary round). The German won two silver medals four years later in her only participation in the 1988 Winter Paralympics in Innsbruck , where she was successful in cross-country sledding over the short distance (2.5 km) and the long distance (5 km).

In 1980 she was awarded the silver medal for disabled sports by the Federal President . Between 1989 and 1994 she sat for the free voters in the Renningen city council. Hagenlocher succumbed to cancer a few days before her 67th birthday. In 2015 Hagenlocher was honored with a special exhibition in her native Renningen.
