Wangershausen is a district of the city of Frankenberg (Eder) in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse .

history

The first documentary mention was made on July 20, 1238 in a sales protocol between Archbishop Siegfried III. von Mainz and the Counts of Battenberg. What is certain, however, is that the place was founded several hundred years earlier (approx. 8th / 9th centuries at the time of the Franks and Saxons). The formerly independent municipality (incorporated in 1971) has around 200 inhabitants today.

At the end of the Thirty Years' War and after the plague epidemic, the number of inhabitants had been decimated from around 125 to around 40.

On December 31, 1970 Wanger Hausen was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the city Frankenberg (Eder) (former spelling Frankenberg-Eder ) incorporated .

Geographical location

Wangershausen is located about 6.5 km northwest of Frankenberg (Eder) , in northern Hesse , close to the North Rhine-Westphalian border. The district of Wangershausen covers about 2900 hectares. The place is surrounded by fields and forests.

economy

The citizens of Wangershausen have always made a living from agriculture and timber. Nowadays, these income fields are only of secondary importance. The people live from craft and industry. Tourism has not been able to gain a foothold here.

particularities

language

The older Wangershäuser speak a Hessian dialect.

House names

The residents of houses are given additional names that are used colloquially (e.g. Kimmelhenses, Nettes, Schusters, Sperers, Pinnjost, Armes); What is meant are the residents of the houses, whose names usually have nothing to do with those of the residents. Some house names are proven to be centuries old and often have something to do with the professions, but also with human characteristics of previous owners.

Reprocessing plant

On December 2, 1980, the then Prime Minister of Hesse, Holger Börner , indicated Wangershausen as a possible location for a reprocessing plant (WAA). On January 25, 1982, a demonstration against these plans took place in Wangershausen , in which around 8,000 to 10,000 people took part. In December 1982 the project was abandoned due to a lack of political majorities and a little later Wackersdorf / Bavaria ( Wackersdorf reprocessing plant ) was considered as a possible new location.

Maimann

The maimann has been a custom in Wangershausen since time immemorial. On a Sunday in May, the strongest schoolboy is wrapped in fresh birch green and hung with a chain of brightly painted blown eggs. Smaller boys and girls are disguised as dwarfs and elves and go through the village singing folk songs with the maimann. The dwarfs and elves sell colorful bouquets and collect money for them, which in earlier times was used for the village school.
