Warlock was a German heavy metal band that was founded in Düsseldorf towards the end of 1982 .

history

The foundation stone for the band was laid by Doro Pesch , Rudy Graf, Peter Szigeti, Thomas Studier and Michael Bastian, who together founded the band in 1981. The latter two left the group shortly afterwards and were replaced by Frank Rittel and Michael Eurich. Doro Pesch should be one of the first female metal singers to be the focus of the band. With the first demo recording , the band managed to secure a record deal with the Belgian record company Mausoleum Records .

In 1984 the debut album Burning the Witches was released , which was so well received by both the press and the fans that the band soon switched to the larger record label Phonogram . While Burning the Witches was still a bit raw, the 1985 album "Hellbound" is more sophisticated and can be assigned more to power metal . At that time, the band was already on stage alongside established artists of the genre. They played at the Metal Hammer Festival on the Loreley alongside bands such as Metallica, Venom, Pretty Maids and Running Wild. With their third album, True as Steel , Warlock modernized their sound, which Rudy Graf didn't like. He left the band in 1986 and was replaced by Niko Arvanitis. The band's success grew steadily. You played in the opening act for WASP on their England tour and traveled with Judas Priest through Europe. Doro Pesch was the first woman ever to appear on stage at the legendary British mega festival "Monsters of Rock" in Donington.

After another line-up change (Frank Rittel and Peter Szigeti left Warlock), the album Triumph and Agony was released in 1987 . With this album, the band achieved their international breakthrough. Great tours followed, including with Dio and Megadeth . Then Doro Pesch decided to start a solo career, so the band broke up.

In 2004, as part of a "Special Reunion Show", the band appeared again in an old line-up under the name Warlock at the Wacken Open Air , which was legally objected to by the band co-founder Rudy Graf, as the naming rights were claimed on his part.

At the same time Rudy Graf was working with a new line-up to found the band with the old concept. The prospect of a production with Ralle Rudnik ( Höhner , Zeltinger , Ute Freudenberg ) as producer was discarded because no satisfactory agreement could be reached for all parties involved in terms of naming rights.

style

With Doro Pesch as the singer, which was still very unusual in heavy metal in the early 1980s, the band differed from other bands in the genre. There have been bands with female lead voices in the hard rock sector ( e.g. Suzi Quatro , Heart , Pat Benatar , The Runaways , Lita Ford , Toronto , Tantrum ), but apart from the Canadian singer Lee Aaron , the bands Girlschool , Rock Goddess , Chastain and Wendy O. Williams, there was little comparable anywhere in the world in the tougher heavy metal sector. This circumstance also meant that the band was able to arouse greater media and fan interest from the outset than the musically comparable newcomer band competition of that time because of Doro.

Others

The cover of the Picture Disc LP of the last Warlock studio album Triumph and Agony received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest record cover in the world. When unfolded for the stand, the size is around 85 × 60 cm.
