What are you looking at?! (Alternative title: Look far! ) Was a 120-part comedy show , often referred to as ethno-comedy , and moderated by Kaya Yanar . It was produced in Cologne-Mülheim .

Program profile and broadcasts

What are you looking at?! was broadcast from 2001 to 2005 in 120 episodes on Sat.1 . In it mainly stereotypes of different nationalities , especially Turks , were used and ironically criticized. Kaya Yanar played the sketches herself, with several re-emerging roles. At the beginning of each show, Kaya Yanar addressed current events. In addition to sketches, excerpts from foreign channels that were perceived as funny were shown. Once, however, in the opinion of some Muslim viewers, Yanar went too far when he waved a huge Turkish flag instead of the American one in 2001 in a parody of the Madonna video of " American Pie " and played an actress dressed in a full-body veil ( hijab ) as a supporting role . After many written protests received on Sat.1, Yanar then apologized to the audience for (allegedly) denigrating Islam.

Harald Schmidt's Bonito company took over production from 2003, and in 2004 legal proceedings were taken against the use of the question “What are you looking at?” In the refrain of a song. The last broadcast was broadcast on December 30, 2005. The English show Goodness gracious me , from which some skits were taken, is considered the model for the show . A total of five seasons were produced. Repetitions of the comedy show are shown in the early program on Sat.1 and Sat.1 Emotions .

Frequent supporting actors were Carolin Kebekus , Özgür Cebe , Keirut Wenzel , Peter Rütten and Nina Vorbrodt .

The title song is a modification of the title "Soul Bossa Nova".

Rubrics and Figures

Various characters are played by Kaya Yanar, who appear in small clips, sometimes during the broadcast.

  • Hakan: A Turkish bouncer who works in a disco. His sentence, if someone is not allowed in, is: "Hey, you can't get in here!" Sometimes he hits people too. It is also used in other broadcasts with Yanar.
  • Ranjid: The Indian has a cow named Benytha, which he often takes with him. He can often be seen at work as a cleaner . It is also used in other broadcasts with Yanar. He is also the main character in the film Agent Ranjid Saves the World .
  • Francesco: An Italian gigolo who invites women to dinner, but who leave quickly.
  • Yildirim: He and his Turkish family own the Kelal Yildirim driving school. The family consists of Kelal, Songül, Ayse and Günes.
  • Sirtaki man: A Greek sirtaki dancer who brings disputed people to reconciliation through a common dance. He usually suddenly jumps into the picture with the exclamation “Grandpa!”.

Sections were shown in the broadcast, including

  • Driving school Kelal Yildirim: Kelal and his family drive with an overloaded Ford Escort , in every episode there is the driving learner Winter. A running gag is that Kelal calls him differently every time (e.g. road salt , Sydney or spring ). In the second season, however, an accident was built because Winter, out of sheer euphoria at having escaped a police patrol, tears off the steering wheel and the car ends up in the ditch . This means that the rubric has not been continued since 2002. The successor is the section The Yildirims (Not with my daughter) .
  • Radio Suleymann: Suleymann speaks to (or helps) people who have various problems. His pet, called Suleyhund , is always with him . Every time it hides under the table in a mess of cables. Suleymann works in a room that is lit with disco balls or wall lamps. The rubric is a parody of Domian , which was broadcast on 1Live at night .
  • Daily look: Hakan is the news anchor for the rubric. The greeting is: “Hey, guys! What's going on? Do you watch blatant daily news with news and such! ”In the middle of an episode, Kelal Yildirim makes a comment on a certain topic. At the end the weather is always shown. Hakan then says: “Hey, weather ass! Make the shit weather! ". The weather man, called De Wetterarsch , is usually beaten by Hakan at the end. The daily watch is a parody of the daily news .
  • Dubai 2 UAE TV: Yanar goes as reporter Tarek from del Kalek to various German locations. It is partly reported in gibberish and translated with subtitles, whereby the Arabic language is to be imitated.
  • The Yildirims (Not with my daughter): Successor to the Kelal Yildirim driving school , which was used in 2001. The rubric is a fictional daily soap . All the figures from the previous column are also available here and Kelal gives Winter different names here too. The rubric has been used since 2003.
  • Ranjid Undercover: Ranjid works as a private detective in a room.
  • Mehmet Fix Kochstudio: Mehmet greets the people with: “Welcome to the Mehmet Fix Kochstudio. I've prepared something very special again. Look here, …". Then he demonstrates how various (fictional) dishes are prepared (e.g. Mehmet Fix for de Mann). It's a parody of the Maggi cooking studio.
  • Olga: Yanar plays the fortune teller Olga in the rubric . Often, when someone walks in the door, Olga immediately knows the person's name.

Hakan and Ranjid were used to advertise The Telephone Book and Crunchips .
