reception
Age rating
In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12. The statement of reasons for the release states that the dark story was told in flashbacks and with contemporary features, and the complex characters remained partly ambivalent or profound. Since the fairy-tale setting is far from the reality of life for 12-year-olds and they hardly find any emotional points of contact with the bizarre characters, they can keep enough distance and process the film without being overwhelmed.
Reviews
So far, the film has won over 89 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics and received an average rating of 7.3 out of a possible 10 points
Peter Osteried from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a calmly narrated, haunting film that scores points not only because of its unreal mood, but also because it addresses the conflict between those “up there” and them Allocate space “down there” in only minimally claused form. The film is primarily a drama, but it also functions as a subtle horror for an adult audience because the film manages to take over the first-person perspective of the narrator Merricat and thus show the events from her point of view, and Constance into one Art StepfordWive, who wants to smile away every problem and conflict and please everyone.
