White black

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In White / Black is a Japanese trading card game , which of Bushiroad is published and on various anime and visual novel based. The cards can be roughly divided into a white and a black side, whereby the white side is based on "cute" characters and the black side on "cool" characters.

Game concept

The game is based on two main aspects, on the one hand on the battle between the character cards and on the other on the level. There are no winning conditions, but there are two losing conditions:

  • 1. The player who reaches level 4 first loses.
  • 2. If a player has no cards in the waiting room or deck at any time in the game

So the aim of the game is usually to send the opponent to level 4. This is achieved with the help of the battles of the character cards.

The dilemma in which every white / black player sees himself is as follows: Character and event cards with levels higher than level 0 can only be played if your own level is greater than or equal to this level and there are cards of the same color in your own Level slot or in the clock slot. For Climax cards, this only applies in that a card of the same color must be in the level or clock slot.

Another aspect of the game that is worth mentioning is that if there are no more cards in the deck, the "Waiting Room" of the respective player is shuffled and placed face down as a deck, whereupon this player takes damage that is not caused by Climax cards can be prevented.

The playing field

The playing field is divided into several areas: Memory, Deck, "Waiting Room", "Clockslot", Stock, Climaxzone, Levelslot and Stage, which is divided into three "Front Row" and two "Back Row" fields.

Card types

There are 3 different types of cards in white / black: character cards, event cards and climax cards. These can be broken down into four different colors ("yellow", "green", "red" and "blue"). A deck must consist of exactly 50 cards and can contain up to four copies of a card with the same name, but cannot contain more than a total of eight Climax cards.

Character cards

Character cards are the most frequently played cards in the deck, as their attacks damage the opponent and are thus defeated over time. In addition to a color and a side, character cards naturally have a name, a level, a cost, possibly a counter or clock icon, a card text, possibly an effect text, "Power", a "Trigger", a certain number of "Soul" , up to 2 "traits" and a serial number with rarity.

Character cards can be in one of 3 different positions:

  • "Stand" position.

The card lies upright so that the player controlling it can read it.

  • "Rest" position

The map lies across, with the head end pointing to the right.

  • "Reverse" position

The card is at an angle of 180 ° to the "stand" position.

Event cards

Event cards have an immediate effect that supports the player or harms the opponent. This type of card also has a name, a level, a cost, a card text, an effect text, "power", a "trigger" and a serial number with rarity in addition to a color and a side.

Climax cards

Climax cards, like event cards, only have one effect, which when played in the "Climax phase" usually increases the "power" or "soul" of character cards. The second and often more important aspect of this type of card is the ability to prevent any kind of damage (except mixed damage).

Additional effects

The counter icon

If a card has a counter icon, it can be used by hand during the opposing "Battling Phase" to support an attacked character card.

The clock icon

The clock icon indicates that this card has an effect that can be activated from the "clock slot".

Course of the game

A game of white / black takes place in several alternating turns of both players, whereby a turn is divided into several phases. At the beginning the starting player is determined by playing rock-paper-scissors. Then both players draw five cards from their shuffled deck, look at them and can then put any number of cards in the "Waiting Room" in order to be able to draw the same number of cards. Then the game begins:

"Stand phase"

All character cards that were previously in the "rest" position are turned back into the "standing" position.

"Draw Phase"

The active player draws a card from his deck and puts it in his hand. This always happens, even at the beginning of the game, on the player's first turn, which begins.

"Clock Phase"

The active player can choose to put a card from his hand into the clock slot in order to be able to draw two cards from the deck.

"Main Phase"

In this phase the active player can play character cards and event cards, move character cards that are on the "stage", place character cards from the "stage" in the "waiting room" and use the effects of character cards, as far as this is permitted.

"Climax Phase"

Your own Climax cards can be played in this phase.

"Battling Phase"

The active player declares an attack of his choice from one of his character cards, so that it can damage the opponent with its "soul" and possibly defeat a character card opposite. On the first turn of the player who begins, he can only attack with one character card. Furthermore, only character cards that are in the "Stand" position and in the "Front Row" can attack. If one of these character cards attacks, it is turned from "Stand" to "Rest" position.

"Attack Declaration Step"

There are 3 different types of attacks:

  • Direct attack

This type of attack always occurs when the attacking character card faces an empty slot. This gives the attacking character card an extra "soul".

  • Front attack

The active player can choose this type of attack if the attacking character card is facing a character card of the opponent.

  • Side attack

The active player can choose this type of attack if the attacking character card is facing a character card of the opponent. This does not trigger a fight between the two cards, instead the "Soul" of the attacking character card is reduced by the level of the character card opposite.

"Trigger Step"

After an attack has been carried out, the active player reveals the top card of his deck and executes the possible effect of the "trigger". Then he puts it face down in his stock slot.

There are 7 different types of triggers:

  • "None"
    "None" icon

This card has no trigger, nothing is triggered.

  • "Soul"
    "Soul" icon

This trigger gives the attacking character card +1 "Soul"

  • "Whirl"
    "Vortex" Icon

This trigger allows the active player to send an opposing character card to the opponent's hand.

  • "Gold"
    "Gold" icon

The card that has this trigger is placed in the hand of the active player and the top card of the deck of the active player is placed in his stick.

  • "Bag"
    "Door" icon

When this trigger is activated, the top card of the active player's deck is placed face down in his stick. The card that has this trigger is then also placed in the stock.

  • "Door"
    "Door" icon

This trigger allows the active player to take his own character card from the "Waiting Room" into hand.

  • "Book"
    "Burst" icon

This trigger forces the active player to draw a card from their deck.

  • "Burst"
    "Burst" icon

This trigger gives the opponent damage afterwards if the attack of the character card that triggered it is prevented by a Climax card.

"Counter Step"

If the active player has carried out a "Front Attack", the opponent can now play a card with a counter icon, the effect of which is then carried out. Mostly the attacked character card is given a bonus of "power".

"Damage Step"

The opponent now takes damage equal to the soul that the attacking character card has. This means that the top X cards of his deck are stored face up in his clock slot. If a Climax card is revealed, however, all damage is prevented and the revealed cards are placed in the "Waiting Room".

"Character Battling Step"

This step is carried out if a "front attack" has been carried out. The "power" of the two opposing character cards is now compared and the one with less "power" is turned to the "reverse" position.

"Encore Phase"

When all of a player's attacks have been made, both players enter this phase. All character cards in "Reverse" position are now placed in the "Waiting Room". However, both players can pay the "encore" cost of their character cards. Even if a character card does not specifically have this effect, the player can still pay the cost of 3, since every character card has an "Auto Encore". Character cards that have used "Encore" are then turned to the "rest" position.

"End phase"

The active player ends his turn and gives it to the opponent. If one of the players has 8 or more cards in hand, he must discard cards until he only has 7.

Video game

On November 23, 2011, a video game version of the white / black trading card game for the Playstation Portable called "White Black Portable" was released in Japan , with 2 versions of the game being released ("Version White", "Version Black"). Among other things, the sets are Angel Beats! , Index , Idolm @ ster and Fate / stay night included.

Anime

There are two anime adaptations: White Survive and the successor White Survive R.

English version

The first English-language marketing of the game began in 2008, shortly after the game was released, with the release of an English version of the "Trial Deck" for Disgaea . However, this was not pursued by Bushiroad for a long time. Since June 30, 2012, the English version of the game has been increasingly marketed. On the date mentioned, two "Trial Decks" were released, one from the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica series , one from Fate / Zero . In 2013, in addition to the English version of the main set by Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica and Fate / Zero, the "Trial Deck" and the main set by Sword Art Online will be released.
