Canaan (originally called 428 the animation called) is an anime - television series based on the second bonus scenario of Sound Novel for the Nintendo Wii 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de based, even a few games a perfect score in the Critique of Famitsu received. The actual game comes from Chunsoft , but the 2nd bonus scenario with the character Canaan from Type-Moon (text: Kinoko Nasu , graphics: Takashi Takeuchi ) was contributed. The anime was first shown on Japanese television on July 4, 2009.
action
The presentation of the plot leaves many questions unanswered at the beginning and begins abruptly with a monologue by a narrator addressed to the protagonist Canaan. In it he reports that both Canaan and her adversary fell victim to a war that robbed them of their past. As trained assassins, both are said to have stoked their hatred as the source of their strength and yet both are said to be different from each other. In his last words, he points out to Canaan that she cannot fight hatred with hatred. He is alluding to the past of the two characters who grew up in war-torn Canaan and came into contact with a secret biological weapon , the UA virus . There Canaan was "adopted" by her future instructor and former Siamese soldier. He taught her how to use every imaginable weapon and is enthusiastic about her talent, which enables her to see enemies as colors even behind walls. What she did not know, however, is the fact that even her worst adversary, Alphard, was trained by Siam and also received the name Canaan from him . In a confrontation, Siam is eventually killed by Alphard, which made both enemies. At this time, Canaan also met Maria, who gave her a sense of life again and became her best friend.
Starting now, the plot initially focuses on Maria Ōsawa, who flies from Japan to Shanghai with reporter Minoru Minorikawa and is supposed to support him in his work as a photographer . In doing so, the two very quickly become involved in a large plot that Alphard worked out. So both have to realize that there are definitely more people who came into contact with the UA virus. In the series they are referred to as Borner . They then also developed special skills, but are dependent on a drug, with whose withholding they are blackmailed by the sadistic Liang Ji. Liang Ji, meanwhile, aims to win Alphard's love, whom she considers her sister, and follows her instructions almost unconditionally. She is supported by her assistant Cummings, whom she repeatedly abuses, but which he obviously enjoys.
Little by little, Maria moves more and more into the center of the plot as the terrorists storm an international conference, take the American president hostage and infect him with the UA virus. So there are only about 12 hours left to get a suitable antidote, which is in the care of the Japanese government, more precisely Maria's father. However, he allegedly died in a bomb attack while he was leaving, whereupon the American government felt pushed into a corner and started to completely destroy the building from the air in order to curb the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, Canaan tries to free Maria, who was also taken hostage, from the building. However, there is not enough time for this because of the air raid. However, she gets help from her client and the former soldier Santana, who, with the help of her skills, enable her to deflect the missile so that it hits a little way next to the building. However, her eyes are visibly overwhelmed by this show of strength and she loses her ability to perceive colors.
Without their color perception visibly weakened, Canaan, Mino and Maria try to track down the origin of the virus on a trip to western China and also to find Alphard. In doing so, they first come across Liang Ji, who is particularly interested in Canaan, as she sees her as a competitor in her madness. Hakko and Santana, among others, perish after Hakko was tricked into using her deadly voice against Santana. Out of love and sadness, she stayed with him when the building collapsed over her. Meanwhile, Liang Ji was seriously injured in the argument with Canaan and was ultimately shot at by Cummings.
The last conflict finally takes place in a train between Alphard and Canaan, while Mino and Maria can only watch powerlessly. A flashback also reveals a lot about the past of both characters who had the same instructor named Siam. However, Alphard was not happy with her position and killed Siam. Since then, the two have been in constant conflict. During the current argument, Canaan can ultimately prevail, although it remains open whether Alphard was killed in the collision with a tunnel wall.
The last scene in the series focuses on Maria, who flies back to Japan exhausted. With the help of some old photographs it becomes obvious that she was once friends with both Canaan and Alphard and thus represents a connection between the two opponents.
Characters
- Canaan ( カ ナ ン , Kanan )
- She is the protagonist of the anime, after which the series was named. As a girl of Arab descent and grew up in a crisis area, where she was adopted by a soldier who taught her how to handle weapons and how to kill people. She has the special gift of being able to recognize the feelings and intentions of other people with her eyes as color. This enables Canaan to perceive friends and enemies even through walls, comparable to a sense of smell.
- Maria Ōsawa ( 大 沢 マ リ ア , Ōsawa Maria )
- Together with Minoru Minorikawa she visits Shanghai to accompany him as a "camerawoman" and secretly in the hope of finding Canaan. She has a very close and friendly relationship with Canaan, about whose background nothing is known. She is also the daughter of the man who found a cure for the UA virus. It is therefore a suitable means of pressure for the various parties, which makes them ignorant the target of hostage-taking.
- Minoru Minorikawa ( 御 法 川 実 , Minorikawa Minoru )
- He is an experienced reporter and photographer who is hoping for new material in Shanghai. He is accompanied by Maria Ōsawa, whose lively manner of a beginner and the affection of his boss for her, he cannot understand.
- Alphard Al Sheya ( ア ル フ ァ ル ド ・ ア ル ・ シ ュ ヤ , Arufarudo Aru Shuya )
- She is one of the opponents of Canaan who has the same tattoo and has been targeting Canaan for a long time. She is unscrupulous and seems to know only one goal to accomplish her mission. Like Canaan, she is of Arab descent, is perceived by the other characters as a beauty and had the same instructor, but whom she murdered. During her training, she also carried the name Canaan and later adopted the synonym Alphard.
- Liang Ji ( リ ャ ン ・ チ ー , Ryan Chī )
- Liang Ji is a sadistic woman who imagines she is Alphard's beloved sister and seems to submit to her almost unconditionally, although she finds the hypothermic, almost indifferent treatment by her sister painful. Meanwhile, she takes out her aggression on men whom she likes to seduce on the one hand and torment her at the same time. In particular , she repeatedly uses her closest subordinate, Cummings , as the target of her anger. Cummings, on the other hand, is masochistic and enjoys it when Liang Ji takes out her anger on him.
- Yunyun ( ユ ン ユ ン )
- It only plays a secondary role in the action, but is used again and again for running gags . Yunyun is very busy doing one job after the other, unconsciously clashing with the other characters who are her source of income, e.g. B. destroy your employer's restaurant. She herself was infected with the UA virus and has since been dependent on a drug that Liang Ji uses to blackmail her. In contrast to other boners, she has no special skills, since she only grew a second appendix.
- Hakkō ( ハ ッ コ ー )

What role he played there and what connection he is with is completely unclear at first - except that he apparently wanted to protect affected people from others. With Hakkō, Santana not only has a kind of love relationship, but has developed a protective instinct towards her and feels responsible for her safety as well as her well-being - especially the penetrating and unpleasant questions from Minoru Minorikawa he tries to nip in the bud - he asks also likes to return to personal needs, and his whole life is practically only about Hakkō and preparing her a comfortable life. However, there is another bond between the two that lies in their shared past.
Anime
Emergence
Canaan was created in the animation studio PA Works , whose first independently produced series was true tears . Directed by Masahiro Andō , who most recently directed the film Stranger Mukō Hadan for Bones . The script was written by Mari Okada , who had previously worked on the adaptations of Vampire Knight and true tears . Based on the drafts by Takashi Takeuchi, Kanami Sekiguchi worked out the character design.
Publications
The anime was originally produced under the title 428 the animation and was accordingly announced in the October 2008 issue of Newtype magazine and by Sega at the Tokyo Game Show , which showed a trailer for the series that was an adaptation of the original concept of Chunsoft game 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de should be.
During production, in December of the same year, the title of the series changed to Canaan , which corresponds to the name of the protagonist. At the Comiket , also held at the end of December, Sega distributed numerous DVDs with trailers and various bonus material together with CDs of the theme song Arousing Soul by Faylan.
On November 26th, 2009 Universum Anime announced in its official forum that it had acquired the license for the German-speaking area. On April 2, 2010, the first episode of the anime was released on DVD. The remaining 12 episodes appear on three additional DVDs every month
For October 2009, the premiere of three films was announced, which are to be cut from the television episodes.

Manga
Based on the plot of the anime, three manga series were created.
The manga Canaan was heavily based on the series and published in the Comp Ace manga edited by Kadokawa Shoten . By Akira Ishida drawn series was published within the magazine at monthly intervals since the August 2009 issue and ran there until March issue, 2011. The individual chapters appeared grouped into three tankōbon -Expenditure when Imprint Kadokawa Comics A .

The second manga adaptation was titled Canaan Sphere ( CANAAN ス フ ィ ル ) and was written by Kadokawa Shoten in collaboration with Chunsoft . The drawings are by Jun Sasameyuki. The plot takes place some time before the events in the series and goes deeper into the history of the characters seen in the series. The manga was published as a web manga by Comic Gekkin where it has been published since March 1, 2010. The individual chapters were combined into two Tankōbon editions and appeared in the Imprint Emotion Comics, which belongs to Kadokawa Shoten .

Artbook
The Canaan Official Fanbook ( カ ナ ン オ フ ィ シ ャ ル フ ァ ン ブ ッ ク ) was published by Ichijinsha for the series. It contained numerous sketches and drawings of the characters in the series, along with commentary and background information on the episodes, as well as interviews with the creatives.

DJCD
Based on the soundtrack of the series, two DJ CDs under the title CANAAN DJCD Shanghai Hanten de Aimasho ( CANAAN DJCD 上海 飯店 で 会 い ま し ょ う ) were released on December 23, 2009 (FCCM-298) and February 24, 2010 (FCCM-299) Published by Geneon Entertainment on the Frontier Works label. The artists included were Aino Nanjo, Haruka Tomatsu, et al. specified.
characters
PVC figures were made by various manufacturers for the characters, especially for Canaan and Alphard. A figure equipped with ball joints and thus freely positionable was designed by Miki Asai and was published by Max Factory in November 2009. Four more characters appeared on Good Smile Company . The first two were designed by Reiichi Ito in the Nendoroid style and depict Canaan and Alphard. They appeared in December 2009 and January 2010. This was followed by two figures designed by Kunihito Iwamoto. The first was a depiction of Canaan and was published in March 2010. The second was a depiction of Alphard and was published in May 2010. Both figures were made on a scale of 1: 8.
Internet radio broadcast
Under the title CANAAN RADIO , subtitled as 裏 ・ 上海 飯店 蛇 通信 , ran as part of the Animate on Air! ( ア ニ メ イ ト ON AIR! ) On three different websites an internet radio program that accompanied the broadcast of the anime. It comprised ten programs that were broadcast between July 10, 2009 and January 5, 2010. The series' seiyū acted as moderators in the role of their characters.
reception
In the first week of sales from October 19-25, 2009, the DVD was 13th in the top 30 of the Japanese DVD sales charts. The Blu-ray Disc, on the other hand, took third place. The second DVD / Bluray pair subsequently achieved eighth and sixth place. The sixth and last release was finally in positions 15 to 21. It was a good bit behind the series Bakemonogatari and K-On! who still hold the sales records for series to this day.
At the fourth annual Seiyū Awards, Miyuki Sawashiro was honored for her role as Canaan as Best Actor of a Main Character. As a complete work, Canaan was recognized as a work of long animations recommended by the jury at the thirteenth Japan Media Arts Festival Awards.
