The White Meadow ( Bílá louka in Czech , Biała Łąka in Polish ) is a plateau between the main ridge and the eastern Bohemian ridge of the Giant Mountains on the Czech-Polish border. Another name is silver comb ( Czech Stříbrné návrší ).

location

The high plateau lies between the Brunnberg ( Studniční hora ) in the northwest and the Koppenplan ( Równia pod Śnieżką ) in the east, which forms the slope of the area. The northern boundary is formed by the steep walls of the glacier basin on Mały Staw Karsee . On the southern edge, near the meadow hut ( Luční bouda ), lies the headwaters of the Bílé Labe ( white water ), which cut deeply into the terrain to the southwest. Larger cities in the vicinity are Spindleruv Mlyn (Czech: Špindlerův Mlýn ), 6 km away, and Karpacz ( Krummhübel ), which is also around 6 km away , but in the opposite, north-east direction.

Hydrology

The entire area is extremely damp and criss-crossed by numerous small water veins and forms a watershed between the North and Baltic Seas . The Bílé Labe collects the water in a south-westerly direction and is the first major tributary to the Elbe and thus to the "Elbe - North Sea" river system . In a northerly direction the source streams of the Łomnica ( Great Lomnitz ) flow together and belong to the river system " Oder - Baltic Sea".

Flora and fauna

Most of the area is overgrown with arboreal grass ; in between, everlasting flowers and a few low mountain pines . The exposed location and harsh climate have a major impact on the number of species that live here. Only a few herbivorous bugs, spiders and beetles can stay at this altitude, but they are food for various bird species such as B. Mountain Pipit , Black Redstart and the Red Star Bluethroat .

Conservation and Tourism

The White Meadow is located on the territory of two national parks: in Poland in the Karkonoski Park Narodowy (KPN) and in the Czech Republic in the Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP). This means that the paved paths must not be left and that the Wiesenbaude cannot be reached by motorized vehicles either.

The hiking trails are marked:
- Blue, leads from Przeł pod Śnieżką , the pass below the Schneekoppe into the Weißwasser Valley and on to Spindleruv Mlyn.
- red, leads along the path of Polish-Czech friendship (Kammweg) from Vrchlabí ( Hohenelbe ) to Spindleruv Mlyn.
- yellow, leads from the Wiesenbaude to the former tourist border crossing on Koppenplan. In winter, a cross-country ski trail connects the Wiesenbaude with the Spindlerova bouda (
Špindlerova bouda ) on the Spindlerpass ( Przełęcz Karkonoska )
