The White Moor is a 55 hectare nature reserve near Neuenkirchen in the Dithmarschen district . It is the only remaining raised bog in the Schleswig-Holsteiner Marsh . It represents the southern limit of distribution of the cloudberry .

The moor did not emerge until about the 5th century and expanded to 245 hectares in 1643. However, it was decimated by peat mining in the following centuries . In the raised bog core there is a three-meter-thick layer of white peat over an approximately 50-centimeter-wide layer of low peat that rests directly on the marshland. It has been under nature protection since 1979.

In the raised bog, in addition to various peat grasses, species such as bell heather , rosemary heather , cranberry , cotton grass , bog lily and sundew are typical plants. Meadow pipit , skylark and reed bunting live there . In the peat bog areas there are reeds , cattails , rushes and sedges , and the reed warbler and marsh warbler live on birds .

In contrast to other marshes, the moor is not drained, but rather watered for maintenance. Reeds and sedges are mowed, and birch trees that have spread into the moor are regularly cut by 1 euro workers (work opportunities with additional expense allowance).
