The Weikersheim area is a nearly 2,700 hectare landscape protection area in the area of the cities of Bad Mergentheim , Creglingen , Niederstetten and Weikersheim in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg . It was designated by ordinance of May 19, 1993 (LSG number 1.28.013).
history
Originally the protected landscape area covered 2770 hectares. Due to an ordinance of the regional council of Stuttgart dated September 23, 1994 and the associated designation of the Steinriegellandschaft nature reserve between Weikersheim and Elpersheim , the area was reduced by 77 hectares.
location
The nature reserve of around 2700 hectares is part of the Tauberland.
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose of the landscape protection area is:
- the preservation of special topographical formations and landscape elements that shape the character of the landscape in their diversity, uniqueness and beauty. Particularly noteworthy are the near-natural flowing waters, the blades and side valleys as well as the stone bars;
- the protection of ecological compensation areas as retreats for animal and plant species in order to guarantee the greatest possible biodiversity. Here, the slopes in particular, with their diverse mosaic of use, represent ecologically valuable biotopes;
- securing the entire landscape as a valuable recreational area for the general public.
