The Heinrich Vollmer winery is a German private winery in Ellerstadt in the Palatinate wine-growing region .

history

Heinrich Vollmer (* 1948) comes from the Baden town of Durbach and was the second born to take over his father's farm, which was also used for viticulture. Heinrich Vollmer was introduced to the winemaking trade at the age of eight. At the age of 15 he took part in the exchange program of the DFJ ( German-French Youth Office ) and worked for four years as a volunteer at the Bouchard Père et Fils winery in Montrachet in Burgundy, France .

After his return in 1968 there were disagreements with his father about the further management of the company and Heinrich Vollmer emigrated to the Palatinate . There he acquired an heirless winery in Ellerstadt in 1972 and expanded it into one of the largest German private wineries in just a few years. In the spring of 1987 Vollmer was sentenced by the Neustadt an der Weinstrasse district court to 72 days' imprisonment or 72 daily sentences of 100 marks each and the immediate removal of the Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The cultivation of this grape variety was not yet allowed in Germany at that time. The charges were dropped in a second hearing. The first German test facility for Cabernet Sauvignon was then built on Heinrich Vollmer's property in collaboration with the Rhineland-Palatinate State Research Institute . The distant Cabernet Sauvignon vines are now being harvested at Bodega Enrique Vollmer , the Argentinian winery Vollmers in the Valle de Uco near Mendoza in Argentina .

Around 450,000 liters of white wines and 450,000 liters of red wines are produced annually in the cellar of the estate. Vollmer's customer base includes private wine connoisseurs as well as wine trade , gastronomy , retail ( Rewe , Tengelmann , Edeka ) and airlines ( Deutsche Lufthansa , Condor ).

Heinrich Vollmer has also been running a winery in Argentina since 1987 , the Bodega Enrique Vollmer.

Grape varieties and vineyards

Because of his French-influenced training as a winemaker, French grape varieties have been among Heinrich Vollmer's specialties since the beginning. These include Cabernet Sauvignon , Saint Laurent , Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris , Pinot Noir , Sauvignon Blanc , Chardonnay and Auxerrois . But the local varieties Riesling , Dornfelder and Portugieser are also grown. The winery traditionally relies on selective harvesting and careful processing of the grapes. The white wines are aged in modern stainless steel tanks, while the red wines are traditionally fermented on the mash and aged in wooden barrels. The "great wines" mature for up to 18 months in barrique barrels in the cellar of the Ellerstadt estate.

The Heinrich Vollmer winery currently has 104 hectares of vineyards around Ellerstadt / Pfalz in the Dürkheimer Feuerberg, Deidesheimer Hofstück , Ellerstadter Bubeneck and Ellerstadter Kirchenstück sites. Some of these are owned by the winery and some of them are leased by a producers' association founded especially for this purpose.

Awards

Since the founding of the Heinrich Vollmer winery, numerous awards have been won, including the gold state wine award for the 2009 ALTUM Cabernet Sauvignon dry barrique and the gold DLG award for the 2010 dry pinot gris .
