Life

Studies and work as a film producer

Vivian Qu was born Wen Yan in Beijing, where she grew up. She studied fine arts in New York , where she discovered the medium of cinema for herself. According to her own statements, working in film unites all of her interests such as writing, photography and music; Qu had previously been afraid of having to choose between a passion. In New York, she attended screenings at the Film Society Museum in Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art .

After several years overseas, Qu returned to Beijing in 2003. She started working as a film producer to support independent Chinese filmmakers. In 2007 Qu was involved in the production of a film for the first time with Diao Yinan's Ye che (English title: Night Train ). The story of a 30-year-old executioner (played by Dan Liu ) at a provincial court in Shaanxi , who unsuspectingly met the widower ( Dao Qi ) of one of her delinquents through a dating agency , was shown at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard and series won several international festival awards. After the co-production of Lichuan Yin's relationship drama Niu lang zhi nu (2008), also shown in Cannes , Qu produced Chunmeng (Longing for the Rain), the first feature film by actual documentary director Lina Yang in 2013 . The film is about a 30-year-old wife and mother in Beijing (played by Zhao Siyuan ) who is unable to articulate her sexual needs towards her husband ( Fu Jia ) , who is addicted to computer games, and who then takes refuge in an affair. Chunmeng received an Honorable Mention at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2013 .

Qu, who is one of the few independent film producers in China, became known to a wide international audience through his renewed collaboration with Diao Yinan. His artfully staged and photographed thriller Feuerwerk am helllichten Tage (2014), which, according to the German film service, congenially transferred the characteristics of American noirs to current Chinese conditions, won the main prize at the 64th Berlin Film Festival with the Golden Bear .

Work as a director and screenwriter

Even before the success of Fireworks in broad daylight , Qu herself began to act as a director and screenwriter. According to her own information, she had previously worked creatively with the directors on film projects as a producer, so the change did not seem profound to her. She made her debut as a director and screenwriter in 2013 with Shuiyin jie (Trap Street) . Qu, who criticizes the fact that there is no independent film industry in China, ostensibly wanted to capture the feeling of watching and being watched at the same time that she had had since the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The story of a municipal surveyor (portrayed by Lu Yulai ) meeting a mysterious woman ( He Wenchao ) on an unmapped street has been shown at several international film festivals. Qu's feature film debut won awards at the Vancouver International Film Festival and Boston Independent Film Festival . On Shuiyin jie , the filmmaker worked with producer Sean Chen, who was executive producer on Ye che and allowed her complete artistic freedom.

In 2017 Qu finished her second feature film Jia Nian Hua (Angels Wear White) . The Toronto International Film Festival described the thriller about two underage girls in a southern Chinese coastal city who are caught in an increasingly dangerous spiral of violence after a violent incident in a hotel, as "disgruntled, contemporary film noir " with "complex female characters". For Jia Nian Hua , Qu was the only director to be invited to the competition at the 74th Venice Film Festival , where the film received no awards.

Vivian Qu counts the French filmmaker Robert Bresson among her role models and values contemporary European directors such as Michael Haneke , Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne or Abdellatif Kechiche . In 2014, as a member of the jury at the 71st Venice Film Festival , she awarded the prize for the best debut film, the Premio Luigi De Laurentiis, to the Indian entry Court by Chaitanya Tamhane .
