career

MSV Duisburg, 1971/72 to 1976/77

Werner Schneider's talent, who came to MSV Duisburg via Viktoria Buchholz and Eintracht Duisburg , led him to six appointments in the DFB youth national team in the 1971/72 season as an A-youth, to success with the West German selection in the final of the DFB youth country cup with 3-1 goals against northern Germany and at the German A youth championship in 1972 with a 2-0 win against VfB Stuttgart . In the final against VfB Werner Schneider stormed the right wing and scored a goal for the team of coach Willibert Kremer and center forward Ronald Worm . The coach of the MSV licensed team, Rudi Faßnacht , brought the youngsters to the Bundesliga in the last two round matches in June 1972 against 1. FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt . Together with Klaus Wunder and Rudolf Seliger , he formed the Duisburg attack in a 4: 3: 3 system.

From the 1972/73 season Werner Schneider was an Olympic amateur on the Bundesliga team of the "Zebras". In the league, the MSV could not stand out in the years up to 1976/77 by placing in the front of the table, ninth place in 1977 with coach Otto Knefler was the only single-digit place in the table in these five rounds. The sporting highlight was reaching the DFB Cup final in 1975. With successes against Blumenthaler SV , 1. FC Nuremberg , FC Bayern Munich (3: 2 in the Munich Olympic Stadium), Altona 93 , Werder Bremen and the 2: 1 after extra time in the semifinals against Borussia Dortmund on April 30, 1975, the team of coach Willibert Kremer moved into the final on June 21, 1975 in Hanover against Eintracht Frankfurt. In the 1-0 defeat in the final, Werner Schneider formed the defense of the Wedau-Elf with Michael Bella , Detlef Pirsig and Bernard Dietz in front of goalkeeper Dietmar Linders . From the initial right winger, he had developed into an attacking right full-back. Through the appearances in the games against Paralimni Famagusta and Levski-Spartak Sofia in the 1975/76 round, Schneider also gained experience in the UEFA Cup . From 1972 to 1977 he played a total of 157 Bundesliga games for MSV Duisburg and scored seven goals.

Borussia Dortmund and Hertha BSC, 1977 to 1983

In the summer of 1977, the attacking full-back moved to Borussia Dortmund. In his first year with the Black and Yellows, 1977/78, he came in eleventh place with trainer Otto Rehhagel . With 33:35 points and a negative goal difference of 57:71 goals - only the relegated FC St. Pauli scored more goals with 86 goals - this round was not optimal for the newcomer as well as for BVB. Werner Schneider experienced the exceeding 12-0 defeat on April 29, 1978 in Düsseldorf against Borussia Mönchengladbach as an active player. In the second year Werner Schneider increased his personal record to 34 games with four goals, but coach Carl-Heinz Rühl (from April 29, 1979 Uli Maslo ) could not lead Borussia forward in the table. In the end, Dortmund ended up in twelfth place. Udo Lattek took over the coaching position in 1979/80 and led Borussia Dortmund to sixth place. Schneider had played in 33 games and scored two goals. Coach Lattek ended his work at BVB on May 10, 1981, and when Mönchengladbach won the Borussia Derby with 3-0 goals in Dortmund on June 13, 1981, Schneider was a left defender, the Westphalia lost their place in the UEFA Cup of the round 1981/82.

In the 1981/82 season, the ex-Duisburg player played his only game in this round for Dortmund against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 15, 1981 and moved to Hertha BSC in the 2nd Bundesliga , where he played against VfL on October 18 Osnabrück celebrated its debut with a 3-0 win. With 26 appearances, he then had a share in the Bundesliga ascent of Hertha, which succeeded with second place in the summer of 1982 with coach Georg Gawliczek . In the upper house of football Hertha could not manage the relegation and immediately rose again in 1983 in the 2nd division. Werner Schneider had played all 34 games in the Bundesliga and scored four goals. The last league game he played with his defensive colleagues Gregor Quasten (goalkeeper), Ole Rasmussen , Dieter Timme and Horst Ehrmantraut on June 4, 1983 in the 2: 3 away defeat at 1. FC Cologne.

After 313 Bundesliga appearances with 18 goals, Werner Schneider ended his career in the Bundesliga in 1984 and moved to Viktoria Goch's amateur camp .

On February 28, 1973, the player from MSV Duisburg made his debut in the international match of the German national soccer team of amateurs in Montecatini against Italy in the DFB-Elf. In the 2-0 victory, the fast man stormed the left wing of the German team. He was also used in the DFB's U23 junior national team on March 27, 1973.
