Setup date 1972

The conservation area Westerholz includes a 600 hectare large wooded area in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech . The forest is located on the high terrace above the Lech in the municipal area of Kaufering , Scheuring and Weil and was placed under protection in 1972. With the protection, the forest should be secured as a recreation area and the typical landscape and flora preserved. Proper forestry is still allowed in the area.

A 40 ha part of the landscape protection area is under greater protection as a natural forest reserve and FFH area .

Historical forest use

The Westerholz served Bavarian dukes and electors as a hunting ground . Wide paths and star-shaped crosses ( hunting stars ) that have been preserved to this day have been laid out for parforce hunts for deer and wild boar . The residents of the neighboring communities had the right to use linden, poplar and aspen as firewood and construction wood until 1938.

Sub-area heron loft

In the north-east of the Westerholz, within the state forest area, there is the 40 hectare natural forest reserve Westerholz (also called heron loft ), which was designated in 1978 and in which there is no forest use. This part of the Westerholz area is also designated as FFH area DE-7831-301 Westerholz , making it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

In the natural forest reserve, which extends from 577 to 583 meters above sea level, tree species such as common oak , winter linden , sycamore maple , ash , beech , birch and alder grow . On the crack moraine floor with loess and clay overlays, there are oak-hornbeam forest communities with transitions to the beech-beech forest . In spring, the landscape is characterized by larger occurrences of wood anemones . The birds that live here include the stock dove , middle woodpecker and oriole . A representative of the insect world is the green lindenbock , whose main distribution is in southern Europe. In 2010, a population of the highly endangered hermit beetle was found in a fallen oak from the Westerholz .

Planning

There are plans to erect up to four wind turbines in the nature reserve around 2020 . For the so-called “intermunicipal citizen power plant” of the municipality of Kaufering, not only a satisfactory wind situation can be expected, but the stricter distance regulations in Bavaria are also met. The Scheuring municipal council decided at the end of 2016 not to take part in such a joint project.
