Widdershausen is the second largest district of Heringen (Werra) in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in East Hesse .

Geographical location

Widdershausen is located in East Hesse north of Heringen and south of the Thuringian city of Werra-Suhl-Tal ( Wartburgkreis ) on the Werra . Immediately north of the town is the state border between Hesse and Thuringia and, from 1949 to 1990, the border with the GDR . The district roads 3 and 4 as well as the Gerstungen – Vacha railway line run through the village , where there was a passenger stop until 1953.

history

The authenticity of the oldest documented mention of the village under the place name Widerolfeshusun in the year 874 is disputed, possibly this is a forgery. In 1431 the place is documented as a Fulan fiefdom of those from Kolmatsch . In 1432 Widdershausen fell to Hesse with the purchase of the Heringen court.

On April 23, 1900, the groundbreaking ceremony for the sinking of the Grimberg shaft near Widdershausen, Wintershall's first potash works, took place .

On February 22, 1953, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the place, damaging several buildings and leaving wide cracks in the area.

Widdershausen as a district

On August 1, 1972, Widdershausen was incorporated into the city of Heringen (Werra) as part of the regional reform in Hesse . whose main town received city rights in 1977.

religion

The church used by the evangelical community today is evidence of uninterrupted Christian settlement since the Middle Ages . The Gothic choir tower has been preserved from an older building, which was given a timber-framed upper floor around 1700 and a late-baroque helmet dome probably around 1800; the weather vane is dated to 1822; the ship was built in 1912. The baptismal font is dated “1571” and is therefore an early example of post-Reformation art; the organ prospectus was made in the late baroque period.

In addition to the Reformed Church, there is also the Evangelical Lutheran Church and Congregation.
