history

Church in Wielenberg

The settlement of Wielenberg began in the 11th century. The church, now consecrated to John the Baptist, dates from this period, the Romanesque core of which is still preserved in the foundation walls. Wielenberg is first documented in the years 1070-1080 as "locus Welinberc" in the tradition book of the Brixen monastery . At that time it belonged to the county of the Bavarian Sieghardinger Engelbert . In 1091 the county, and with it Wielenberg, was transferred from Emperor Heinrich IV to the bishops of Brixen.

In the middle of the 14th century, the noble family of Prey appeared in Wielenberg. They lived on the Genner, Joas and Leitl farms that still exist today. In 1348 the population of Wielenberg was almost wiped out by the plague . The Harrerhof, the Moarleitnerhof and the Hauserhof were built in the 15th century.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the municipality of Wielenberg belonged to the Bavarian district court of Bruneck in the Eisack district and was assigned to the district court of Welsberg in 1813. In 1814 Wielenberg came to Austria like the entire Innkreis . In 1817 the community was reclassified to Bruneck by the Altrasen court in Niederrasen , which later became part of the Welsberg judicial district , and from 1849 was part of the Bruneck judicial district . As a result of the First World War , Wielenberg was added to Italy in 1919, like the entire district of Bruneck . The place received the Italian name form Montevila .

In 1966 a road was built to Wielenberg. From this point on, a few new buildings were added. Today Wielenberg consists of the six old farms mentioned above and some new buildings. Most of the farms live from livestock farming and tourism.
