history

The area around Niederrasen has been inhabited since the Iron Age. Turf was first mentioned in a document around 1050 as "Resinę", "Rasine" or "Rasene". From 1091 a distinction was made between turf, today's Oberrasen (Italian Rasun di Sopra ), and Unterrasen, today's Niederrasen. The castle old sod , located south of the present Niederrasen was in 1210 first mentioned in a document of the Bishop of Brixen. Altrasen Castle was a court seat of the County of Pustertal . From 1553 the castle was no longer used and left to decay. In 1928 the cadastral community of Niederrasen was merged with Oberrasen, Antholz and Olang under fascism to form the large community of Rasen-Olang (Italian: Rasun-Valdaora ) based in Niederrasen. The German-speaking mayors were deposed and a Podestà from the old Italian provinces was appointed community leader. In 1955 the community was divided into the present-day communities Olang and Rasen-Antholz. Niederrasen became the administrative seat of the municipality of Rasen-Antholz.
