history
The station was opened on January 17, 1962 with the Vienna S-Bahn main line and was operational until 2012 as part of the Vienna Südbahnhof (tracks 21 and 22). The exit to the station was in the northeast corner of the station hall, where escalators first led to a mezzanine floor with a ticket office, from which the two platforms in the basement could be reached.
On December 12, 2009, the southern railway tracks and the ticket hall of the southern railway station were closed and subsequently removed and the eastern railway platforms, somewhat shortened, were kept under the name "Wien Südbahnhof (Ost)" as a temporary measure. The subterranean S-Bahn station had previously been given new stairs and elevators, separated according to the direction of travel, on Arsenalstrasse at the corner of Landstraßer Gürtel ( Schweizergarten ). On December 9, 2012, the stop was renamed the Vienna Quartier Belvedere as part of the partial commissioning of the Vienna Central Station and the associated closure of the provisional Ostbahn platforms. The name refers to the new district Quartier Belvedere , which is being built on the site of the former Südbahnhof, and to Belvedere Palace on the other side of the street.
In summer 2015, the station was modernized by around 8 million euros.
