The Buchkogel or Wildoner Berg is a 550 m high elevation in southern Styria , Austria . Together with the Wildoner Schlossberg (450 m) and the Bockberg (449 m), the Buchkogel forms a striking, elongated ridge, which was known as the "Hengist" in the Middle Ages and is now mostly called the Wildonerberg or, after the highest elevation, simply called the Buchkogel, or Wildoner Buchkogel in contrast to the Graz Buchkogel am Plabutsch. As a landmark that can be seen from afar, it separates the Graz field from the Leibnitzer field .

Archeology and geology

The Buchkogel and its immediate surroundings are of great archaeological and geological interest. Numerous archaeological finds indicate that it has been inhabited continuously for 6000 years, which makes the Buchkogel one of the most important archaeological sites in the south-eastern Alps.

From a geological point of view, the mountain is a reef from the Pannonian Sea of the Tertiary Period and consists mainly of Leitha limestone. On the east side of the mountain, at the transition from the steep drop to the flat slope, the surf throat of the primeval sea is still visible today.

Culture park

The neighboring communities of Lang , Hengsberg , Wildon , Lebring and Weitendorf joined forces in 2009 to form a cultural association that offers numerous informative events on the culture, history, biology and geology of the small region. During the municipal structural reform in Styria in 2015, most of the former municipality of Stocking and the former municipality of Weitendorf were merged with the market municipality of Wildon.
