Wilhelm (III.) Prince of Urach (born September 27, 1897 in Stuttgart , † August 8, 1957 in Munich ) was a German mechanical engineer .

Life

Prince Wilhelm von Urach was the son of Wilhelm (II.), Duke of Urach , Count of Württemberg and Amalie, Duchess of Urach , Countess of Württemberg, born. Duchess in Bavaria. He first attended the Hayersche Boys' Institute in Stuttgart and from 1908 the Karlsgymnasium in Stuttgart, where he passed the Abitur in 1914.

On August 3, 1914, he was drafted into the field artillery regiment "King Karl" (1st Württembergisches) No. 13 . On August 18, 1914, he was appointed lieutenant . During the First World War , Wilhelm served mainly in the Reserve Field Artillery Regiment No. 26, in the Carpathian Corps General Command ( IV. Reserve Corps ) and was deployed in France , Poland , Flanders , Serbia , the Carpathians and Bukowina , among others . For his services he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Württemberg Military Merit Order on August 30, 1915 . On December 18, 1917, he was promoted to first lieutenant .

As early as 1916, Wilhelm - probably at his father's request - enrolled as a war student at the University of Tübingen in law . However, his real interest was in technology and engineering . Therefore Wilhelm studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1919 to 1922 . During his studies, he became a member of the fraternity Academic Society Sonderbund Stuttgart . In 1922 he was awarded the engineering diploma. After graduating, he worked for the automotive companies Steiger in Burgrieden near Laupheim , Cockerell in Munich and Bugatti in Molsheim / Alsace . In 1927 he switched to Daimler-Benz . There he initially worked as a designer in Untertürkheim . From 1933 he was a member of the management secretariat. In 1937 he was appointed chief engineer. His area of ​​responsibility included looking after Mercedes drivers at sporting events.

During the Second World War , as an industrial representative, he was responsible for the technical management of the Renault automobile plant in occupied France. From 1945 Wilhelm von Urach worked again in the management secretariat at Daimler-Benz. From 1946 to 1950 he was the car test manager in Untertürkheim. In 1954 Wilhelm von Urach was granted power of attorney . In the same year he was also appointed head of the Daimler Museum. Against his father's resistance, Wilhelm married Elisabeth Theurer on June 19, 1928. She was the daughter of Richard Theurer , the general director of G. Siegle & Co. and Kast & Ehinger, and Elisabeth born. Large. Due to the marriage, Wilhelm renounced the succession as (third) Duke and head of the House of Urach and the title of Count of Württemberg. After the death of Wilhelm II Duke of Urach, the title of duke was passed on to Wilhelm's younger brother, Karl Gero (1899–1981).

The daughters Elisabeth (* 1932) and Maria Christine (1933–1990) emerged from the marriage with Elisabeth Theurer. The doctorate psychologist Elisabeth of Urach worked as Head of Service of education and youth counseling in Stuttgart. Maria-Christine von Urach studied - like her father - mechanical engineering and after completing her studies she worked for the Daimler-Benz company. There she was promoted to head of the main organization and data processing department. Since 1978 she has represented senior executives on the Supervisory Board of Daimler-Benz AG. Wilhelm von Urach died in Munich on August 8, 1957. He was buried in the forest cemetery in Stuttgart .
