Wilhelm Baur (pharmacist)

Wilhelm Baur (born September 29, 1839 in Salem , † February 1921 in Donaueschingen ) was a German pharmacist and botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Baur ".

Life

He attended grammar school in Offenburg and was then an apprentice and assistant in his father's pharmacy in Ichenheim . He then worked as an assistant to Ludwig Leiner in Konstanz and Hallein . From 1865 he worked in Chur and Thusis .

Wilhelm Baur studied pharmacy at the polytechnic school in Karlsruhe and took over his father's pharmacy in 1870. From 1888 he leased his father's pharmacy and in 1900 bought the Fürstenbergische Hofapotheke in Donaueschingen .

In January 1917 he broke the neck of his thigh and was no longer able to walk.

Baur was an important botanist, especially as a bryologist . He made four trips to Norway and Lapland , left behind a rich moss herbarium and was the last southern German pharmacist who dealt extensively with moss studies. In this area he made several publications and prepared teaching herbaria for the University of Freiburg and University of Karlsruhe.

In 1927, the Black Forest Association Donaueschingen installed a memorial plaque for him in the Gauchach Gorge.
