Bernatzik first studied law before he attended the special school for landscape painting at the Vienna Academy under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels from 1873 to 1875 . Other Lichtenfels students included Ferdinand Andri , Heinrich Tomec , Hans Wilt and Maximilian Suppantschitsch . In 1875 he received the Golden Fieger Medal . From 1875 to 1878 he stayed in Düsseldorf , where he belonged to the artists' association Malkasten from 1877 to 1880 . Finally he finished his training with Léon Bonnat in Paris , where he got to know impressionism and open-air painting .

From 1880 Bernatzik was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . In 1897 he was one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession , whose chairman he became in 1902. After having made particular merits in the organization of the XVI. Exhibition ( Great Impressionism Exhibition 1903 ) - together with Julius Meier-Graefe - he left the Secession because of internal disputes with the group around Gustav Klimt in 1905. Bernatzik was also one of the early members of the German Association of Artists .

Wilhelm Bernatzik was buried in the cemetery in Hinterbrühl.

Art historical significance

Wilhelm Bernatzik was primarily a landscape painter, where he used motifs from Vienna and Lower Austria, a. a. in Lundenburg, in Steinfeld and in the Wachau, in Pleinair painting preferred. He also created genre scenes such as landscape processions and symbolist images. The Heiligenkreuz Abbey and related Cistercian themes appear in not a few works, as the monastery is a few kilometers away from his home in Hinterbrühl. Bernatzik is one of the representatives of Wiener Modern around 1900 and was represented by the gallery owner Hugo Othmar Miethke . The exhibition of his work or estate at Miethke in 1906 was also a commercial success.
