Wilhelm Ernst (theologian)

Wilhelm Ernst (born October 9, 1927 in Bonenburg , Höxter district ; † August 1, 2001 in Erfurt ) was a Catholic moral theologian .

Life

Wilhelm Ernst studied Catholic theology in Paderborn and Erfurt . In 1955 he voluntarily moved from West Germany to the German Democratic Republic , although he was critical of the regime of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany . In 1955 he received the sacrament of ordination in Magdeburg , then became vicar in Halle (Saale) and from 1959 assistant at the seminary / philosophical-theological studies in Erfurt. There he was with a thesis on the doctrine of virtue of Francisco Suárez PhD . He became a student pastor in Magdeburg in 1962 and completed his habilitation in the same year.

In 1963 he was first professor of moral theology and ethics, in 1971 he received a reputation as a professor of moral theology, philosophy and Christian social teaching on Philosophy and Theology studies Erfurt. He was rector of the Erfurt University several times.

He also gave guest lectures at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and was a participant in the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council . In 1992 he retired and taught as emeritus until 1995. On the occasion of his 65th birthday, he was honored in 1992 with a festschrift.

Act

Wilhelm Ernst has published numerous scientific papers. Since 1972 he has been co-editor of the “Erfurt Theological Studies” as well as co-author and general editor of the Catholic Adult Catechism II “Life from Faith”.

He was a member of numerous bodies such as the Papal International Theological Commission in Rome.

As chairman of the board of trustees of the Erfurt University of Education , Ernst was heavily involved in the reconstruction of the University of Erfurt and was a member of the founding senate. On April 28, 1997, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services to science and society .

Since 1952 he was a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Falkenstein Freiburg im Breisgau in the Cartell Association of German Catholic student associations .
