Wilhelm Hirte (circumnavigator)

Wilhelm Hirte (born September 1, 1902 in Bremerhaven ; † November 16, 1991 in Hanover ) was a German restaurateur and circumnavigator , world record holder and founder of the Wilhelm-Hirte Foundation named after him .

Life

Born in Bremerhaven as the son of a businessman, Wilhelm Hirte studied business administration at the University of Hamburg and at the University of Cologne before his apprenticeship and traveling years took him through Europe, America and Africa.

Back in Germany, Hirte entered the catering industry. The enthusiastic sports sailor took part in the elimination regattas for the 1936 Summer Olympics during the Nazi era . In the year of the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the restaurateur was the owner of "the spa houses in Swinoujscie and Kolberg [on the Baltic Sea ]", after the war he fled abroad on a bicycle and a folding boat.

After the liberation from National Socialism , Wilhelm Hirte opened his Georgstuben in the Georgspalast (GOP) building that had been bombed out by the previous air raids on Hanover . In quick succession, in the course of the economic miracle and the reconstruction, he also took over the various GOP operations with the variety and the gondola as well as the house of 1000 schnapps , the opera restaurants and the restaurants on the Maschsee . Hirte acted as the client for the renovation of the Georgspalast (architects: Grau, Schweger + Partner , Hamburg / Hanover) . By 1967, Hirte sold his operations again and instead went into international plant business .

In the course of his life, the Hanoverian by choice had set a sailing world record three times . In 1977 he received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .

Wilhelm Hirte, who was one of the richest men in the Lower Saxony state capital, set up the Wilhelm-Shepherd Foundation named after him .

Honors

  • The German Hockey Club Hannover organizes the annual Wilhelm Shepherd Cup "the biggest children's tournament in Northern Germany"; In 2012, 46 hockey teams from among others Berlin, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Lübeck and Mülheim took part in the Ruhr.
  • The Cochlear Implant Center (CIC) "Wilhelm Hirte" Hanover in the Hanover-Bult district keeps the memory of the founder alive in its name.

The Wilhelm Shepherd Memorial Prize

The Wilhelm-Hirte-Gedächtnispreis was set up by the Wilhelm-Hirte-Stiftung and was awarded for the first time in 1999 at the Hannover Medical School (to the physicians Gerald Neitzke and Professor Dieter Bitter-Suermann ). In 2002, the prize "for the promotion of outstanding achievements in clinical teaching" was awarded, for example, to the emergency medicine internship at the Center for Anesthesiology at the MHH (Director: Siegfried Piepenbrock)
