Life

Maurer, a son of the later Chief Postal Secretary Christian Conrad Maurer (1872-1948), grew up in Melsungen. He studied Protestant theology at the Philipps University of Marburg , especially with Heinrich Hermelink , and in 1924 became a repetiteur at the Hessian Scholarship Institute there . In 1926 he was awarded a Lic. Theol. PhD; In 1928 the habilitation for church history followed (both works were published together in 1930 under the title Enlightenment, Idealism and Restoration ). In addition to his work as a private lecturer, he worked as a parish priest, since 1926 in Michelbach , 1937-49 in Caldern . As a member of the Confessing Church , an academic career was initially closed to him; it was not until 1949 that he was appointed associate professor in Marburg. In 1949 he took over the post of provost in the district of Upper Hesse and Schmalkalden (based in Marburg). In 1951 he accepted the chair for Reformation History at the University of Erlangen , which he held until his retirement in 1967.

During his time in Marburg, the Hessian church history was Maurer's research focus. In Erlangen he turned to the history of the Reformation and emphasized Martin Luther's roots in the early church Christology. He dedicated an extensive biography and his late work to Philipp Melanchthon , a commentary on the Confessio Augustana . Another focus were questions of canon law, in particular the relationship between the church office and the general priesthood and questions of episcopal and synodal church leadership. As a specialist advisor for the history of the Reformation, he was in charge of the 3rd edition of the lexicon The Religion in Past and Present (1957–61). His students include Gerhard Müller , Ernst Wilhelm Kohls and Gottfried Seebaß .
