Ernst Kraft Wilhelm Nusselt (born November 25, 1882 in Nuremberg , † September 1, 1957 in Munich ) was a German physicist .

He studied mechanical engineering at the technical universities of Berlin-Charlottenburg and Munich and graduated in 1904 with a degree in engineering . He became Oskar Knoblauch's assistant at the Laboratory for Technical Physics in Munich, where he carried out studies in mathematics and physics . In 1907 he received his doctorate with his theses on the " thermal conductivity of insulating materials ". From 1907 to 1909 he worked as an assistant to Richard Mollier in Dresden and with his work on "Heat and impulse transport in pipes"habilitation .

With his work "The Basic Law of Heat Transfer ", published in 1915 and which has become famous , in which he fundamentally re-presented the heat transfer problems, he founded the similarity theory of heat transfer . In 1916, Nusselt's water skin theory was presented, the theory of heat transfer in laminar film condensation on pipes and vertical or inclined walls.

Wilhelm Nusselt was a professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1920 to 1925 .

In 1925, Wilhelm Nusselt was appointed full professor of the “Chair for Theoretical Mechanical Engineering” from the Technical University of Munich and was appointed director of the “Laboratory for Heat Engines” (together with A. Loschge). From 1925 until his retirement in 1951 he researched and taught there as a professor of thermodynamics . During this time, important publications in the field of heat transfer were made ( Nusselt water skin theory , Nusselt sphere , Nusselt number ).

Wilhelm Nusselt was awarded the Carl Friedrich Gauß Medal and the Grashof Memorial Medal of the Association of German Engineers (1951) and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the TH Dresden in 1953. In 1953 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
