Son Wilhelm attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau , which he left in 1879 (together with Siegfried Czapski , Richard Reitzenstein and Felix Skutsch ) with the Abitur . He then studied in Heidelberg , Leipzig , Freiburg and Breslau . After the state examination he worked for a year as an assistant at the Pathological - Anatomical Institute in Munich under Otto von Bollinger . Here he also received his doctorate in 1885 with a thesis on pathological pigmentation . Under Carl Flügge, Prausnitz worked at the Hygiene Institute in Göttingen until 1886 ; then he went back to Munich to the Hygiene Institute there under the direction of Max von Pettenkofer . From 1888 to 1894 he was assistant to Carl von Voit at the Physiological Institute in Munich. After Prausnitz had completed his habilitation in 1890 , he followed the call to Graz in 1894 and succeeded Max von Gruber at the Hygiene Institute as an associate professor , to which the State Food Research Institute was affiliated in 1897. In 1899 Prausnitz was appointed full professor and in 1907 the bacteriological examination center was also placed under his supervision.

In 1892 he examined the food in factory canteens and in hospitals and advocated problems in social hygiene. This also included research into the causes of infant mortality . He worked on questions related to the hygienic requirements of living and apartments. At the end of his time in Munich, Prausnitz had dealt with the confluence of the municipal sewer system in the Isar. In Graz he was again confronted with problems of sewage disposal . The issues of urban hygiene in the rapidly growing cities were intensive work areas. These included bacteriology , immunity , disinfection and disease control. In practice, its versatility has also proven itself in the construction of various aids and apparatus for laboratory work. Among his approximately 120 articles you will find topics such as mortality and morbidity in childhood , abandonment of building regulations , workers' housing , disinfection , the hygiene of the floor and domestic hygiene . His textbook Basics of Hygiene achieved twelve editions within 30 years. Wilhelm Prausnitz headed the Hygiene Institute in Graz until 1932.
