Karl Wilhelm Georg von Graevenitz (born August 22, 1780 in Breslau , † January 14, 1849 in Dresden ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Wilhelm was the son of the Prussian general of the infantry Friedrich August von Graevenitz (1730-1809) and his wife Juliane Friederike, née von Grawert († 1807).

Military career

Graevenitz occurred on December 1, 1793 Corporal Corporal in the Infantry Regiment "of Reitsenstein" the Prussian army and was promoted by the end of August 1805 to first lieutenant . As such, he was captured during the Fourth Coalition War after the surrender of Magdeburg and was subsequently made inactive.

After the Peace of Tilsit , Graevenitz was re-employed on March 5, 1809 and assigned to the Brandenburg Artillery Brigade . On September 21, 1809 he was promoted to staff captain and on February 14, 1812 to captain . During the Wars of Liberation Graevenitz was wounded in the battle of Großgörschen and was awarded the Iron Cross II class and the Order of Saint Anna II class. He then took part in the battle of Bautzen and was wounded again near Dresden . After his recovery he fought near Leipzig and earned the Iron Cross 1st class for Ligny . He also fought at La Fere Champenoise , Wavre and the blockade of Erfurt . On April 23, 1814 he was promoted to major with a patent from July 27, 1814 and awarded the Order of St. Vladimir IV class on March 17, 1815 .

On May 23, 1816 he was transferred to the 5th Artillery Brigade . From January 31, 1820 to March 29, 1824 Graevenitz was brigadier of the 6th Artillery Brigade and then the 2nd Artillery Brigade . In this position Graevenitz received a bonus of 500 thalers on June 17, 1824. In the same year he wrote the book Organization and Tactics of Artillery , which was also published in French. On July 18, 1825, Graevenitz was awarded the service cross and on March 30, 1829 he was promoted to colonel with a patent from April 8, 1829 . On December 23, 1831 he was appointed inspector of the 2nd Artillery Inspection. On the occasion of the festival of the Order, Graevenitz was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III on January 18, 1834 . Class awarded before his departure on July 28, 1835 with the character received as a major general.

On August 24, 1845 he was appointed senior of the Iron Cross 2nd class. He died on January 14, 1849 in Dresden.

Graevenitz married on March 12, 1804 in Ansbach Friederike Freiin von Falkenhausen (1783-1823), a daughter of Friedrich Ferdinand Ludwig Freiherr von Falkenhausen († 1811) from the house of Wald bei Ansbach . The couple had several children:

After the death of his first wife, he married Betha Schmeling (1804–1882) in Stettin . The daughter Clara (1826–1901) emerged from the marriage and married Detlev Freiherr von Biedermann (1823–1896), the son of Gustav Heinrich von Biedermann , in 1856 .
