Wilhelm von Stutterheim (born January 6, 1770 in Berlin , † December 13, 1811 in Vienna ) was an imperial and royal field marshal lieutenant .

Life

origin

Wilhelm, and occasionally Karl, was a member of the von Stutterheim family, originally from Thuringia . His father was the future minister Heinrich Gottlieb von Stutterheim (1718–1789), his mother is unknown. He was legitimized on December 28, 1773 at the request of his father by the Prussian King Friedrich II . On July 30, 1778 in Saxony and on November 19, 1784, he received the legitimation from the emperor to be raised to the baron status on November 20.

Military career

Knight's Cross of the Military Maria Theresa Order

On November 20, 1784, Stutterheim was included in the nobilization of his family to the baron class . He later joined the Prussian Army and was honored with the order Pour le Mérite on October 2, 1793 , possibly for his service with Pirmasens , although his participation there is unproven. He must then have changed to Saxon service, because on March 28, 1798 he resigned from service in the Saxon Army with the rank of major in order to join the Austrians as Rittmeister in the 2nd Dragoon Regiment on January 10, 1799 . Stutterheim distinguished himself in the battles at Magnano and Trebbia , so that he was promoted again to major on November 18, where he switched to the 1st Uhlan Regiment . He advanced to lieutenant colonel in 1801 , was employed in a diplomatic mission to Paris in 1802/1803 , rose to colonel in 1803 and on October 24, 1805, with a patent from October 14, to major general . On October 24, 1809, he received the Military Maria Theresa Order for his services in the reconquest of Aderklaa during the Battle of Wagram, and on October 13, 1811, he was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal. Stutterheim ended his life in Vienna by choosing suicide that day .

Individual evidence

  1. The date of birth is incorrectly stated in many sources. After studies by Eckart and Karl von Stutterheim, he was born in Berlin in 1770. But the baptism entry in the Trinity Church was corrected at that time. The fact that it was legitimized in different states at different times is believed to have led to the many errors. Overview of the errors in various standard works:
    • ADB 37, p. 77 f. Place and time of birth wrong, based on pastoral field
    • Schmidt-Brentano, wrong date of birth
    • Hirtenfeld, Volume 2, p. 1030 f. Wrong place of birth, wrong name: Karl
    • Wurzbach 40, p. 241 ff. Has two articles: Karl and Friedrich Heinrich Ludwig Stutterheim, with the wrong date of birth
