Romanesque Church of St. James

Building history

Willhof St Jakob 2011 02

The St. Jakobskirche in Willhof was built as a branch church of Altendorf in the 12th century. It is a Romanesque church that originally consisted of a nave with a gable roof and turret and a choir . In the 16th century the church was dilapidated. At the end of the 17th century it was repaired, the current tower was walled up, a sacristy was added to the north side of the choir , large windows were added in the nave and a flat wooden ceiling was added. During a further repair in 1966/67 the west gallery was changed and the side altars , the pulpit and the old organ were removed. In the course of a general renovation from 1994 to 1996, the church received a new organ.

Interior

On the south side, the church has a Romanesque portal that serves as an entrance. There is a Romanesque window exposed in 1966 on the south wall of the nave. The barrel vault in the choir is Romanesque, but the pointed arch windows are Gothic . The 17th century high altar contains an image of James the Elder . A preserved altar sheet from the former side altars from the 17th century hangs on the north wall of the choir arch. It shows St. Anthony of Padua and the Mother of God appearing to him with baby Jesus . Including a figure of Maria Immaculata . On the southern wall of the choir arch there is a painting with the calling of St. Wendelin and a figure of St. Sebastian . The painter Gegenmeier from Steinweg near Regensburg created the modern way of the cross in 1907 .
