Willi ER Xylander (born September 4, 1955 in Hagen ) is a German zoologist specializing in Arthropoda and Plathelminthes , soil organisms , phylogenesis , systematics and taxonomy of invertebrates , ecology and museology . Since October 1995 he has been director of the State Museum for Natural History in Görlitz (since 2009: Senckenberg Museum for Natural History Görlitz ).

Life

From 1962, Xylander attended the Evangelical Eickert School in his hometown of Hagen, switched to the Garenfeld grammar school in 1966 and to the Theodor-Heuss grammar school in 1969 , where he graduated from high school in 1974 . From October 1974 to September 1976 he did military service as a medic . He then worked as a nurse until the end of March 1977 before he began studying biology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . Between April 1981 and April 1982 he wrote his thesis at the littoral station in List . From October 1981 to March 1986 he was employed as a research assistant at the Second Zoological Institute of the University of Göttingen .

In August 1982 he took up a position as a biology teacher at the upper level of a vocational school , which he held until the end of January 1983. In September 1982 he started a dissertation on fish parasites with Peter Ax . From November 1983 to March 1986 he was a fellow of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . On May 5, 1986, he completed the Rigorosum at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . Between April 1986 and April 1987 Xylander was a research assistant at the Institute for General and Special Zoology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and from April 1987 to April 1993 university assistant . On December 9, 1992 , he completed his habilitation in the subject of zoology at the Faculty of Biology at Giessen University, before taking on a C3 professorship for ecology and animal systematics from April 1993 to August 1994 . In October 1993 he was also an employee in the medicine department of Bayerischer Rundfunk . From April 1993 to March 1997, Xylander was a private lecturer in zoology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .

On October 1, 1995, Willi Xylander became director of the State Museum for Natural History Görlitz , which has been operating under the name Senckenberg Museum for Natural History Görlitz since January 1, 2009 . Since the summer semester of 1997 he has been honorary professor for special zoology at the University of Leipzig , since June 2016 also professor for special zoology (invertebrates) at the Technical University of Dresden and since November 2016 a member of the mathematics and natural sciences faculty at Dresden University.
