William E. Paul

William Erwin Paul (born June 12, 1936 in New York City , New York , † September 18, 2015 there ) was an American immunologist .

Live and act

Paul earned an MD from the State University of New York in Brooklyn, New York in 1960 . He directed the Laboratory of Immunology at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a National Institutes of Health (NIH) facility in Bethesda , Maryland . He was also a professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania and at Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv , Israel .

Paul dealt with the regulation of the immune response , in particular the influence of the cytokines on it; with the dynamics of lymphocytes ; how a differentiated section of Th1 and Th2 T lymphocytes is generated; with the development, life span and activation of T-cell memory cells and their importance for vaccination biology ; with the IL-4 receptor and its signaling mechanisms. Further work dealt with the pathogenesis of HIV infections and the possibilities of an HIV vaccine .

Paul has edited numerous journals, including the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), and is editor-in-chief of the Annual Review of Immunology . In 1986/1987 he was President of the American Association of Immunologists .
