William Mumford Gregory

William Mumford Gregory (also William M. Gregory ; born January 18, 1876 in Jonesville , Michigan , † June 27, 1974 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American educator , geographer and geologist .

Life

Family and education

William Mumford Gregory, son of Edgar Bartlett Gregory and Sarah Mumford Gregory, graduated from State Normal College in Ypsilanti , Michigan in 1894 . He then devoted himself to studying geography and geology at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts , in 1904 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree .

William Mumford Gregory married Julia Emery, who was born in East Tawas, Michigan, on June 25, 1904. The children Elizabeth, William and Edgar emerged from the marriage. He died in June 1974 at the age of 98 at the Beatitudes Care Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Professional background

William Mumford Gregory served as superintendent of schools in East Tawas from 1895 to 1902 . After graduating from Harvard University, he became a Teacher of Science at Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio . In 1909 he changed to the position of head of the Department of Geography at the Teachers' College in Cleveland, 1928 he resigned. He also served as Director of the Cleveland Educational Museum and Public Schools from 1914 , from 1925 to 1929 as Lecturer in Economic Geography at Cleveland College, from 1925 to 1937 as Associate Professor of Economic Geography at Western Reserve University and at times as Lecturer in the Summer courses at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , Columbia University , University of Pennsylvania , University of Washington , Clark University and George Peabody College. Gregory also served from 1896 to 1902 for the Michigan Geological Survey, from 1902 to 1905 as a hydrograph for the US Geological Survey, and in 1904 as a water officer for the Lower Michigan area.

William Mumford Gregory, who was particularly responsible for extensive scientific research in the regions around Lake Erie , in both Ohio and Michigan, and the introduction of visual teaching-learning methods in schools in Cleveland, was President of the National Academy of Visual Instruction and a member the American Geographical Society , the Western Reserve Historical Society, the American Association of Museums, and the National Council for Geography Teachers.
