William Nicholson (writer)
William Benedict Nicholson OBE (born January 12, 1948 in Tunbridge Wells , England ) is a writer , screenwriter and director . He was nominated for an Oscar for the script for the film Gladiator from 2000 .
Life
Nicholson, who grew up in a Catholic family, made the decision to become a writer at the age of ten. He studied English at the University of Cambridge . Nicholson first worked on documentaries for the BBC . He later wrote the award-winning Wind On Fire trilogy . For The Wind Singer ( see Aramanth Trilogy ) he received the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 2000 .
He was nominated for the prestigious Tony Award for the plays Shadowlands and The Retreat from Moscow . In 1993 the play Shadowlands with Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger was filmed; the director was Richard Attenborough .
Nicholson wrote several scripts, including a. for the films Martin Luther, Heretic , The March , Nell , Gladiator and Hidden Fire . He also took over the direction of the latter.
In 2015, Nicholson was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
