William Slattery

William Matthew Slattery OFM (born September 6, 1943 in Port Laoise , Leinster , Ireland ) is an Irish religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Pretoria and emeritus military bishop of South Africa .

Life

William Slattery joined the Order of the Franciscans (OFM) and was ordained a priest on February 21, 1970 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Kokstad on November 17, 1993 . He was ordained bishop by the Archbishop of Durban , Wilfrid Fox Napier OFM, on February 19, 1994; Co- consecrators were Michael Rowland OFM, Bishop of Dundee , and Andrew Zolile T. Brook , Bishop of Umtata .

On December 23, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Archbishop of Pretoria and Military Bishop of South Africa. On January 30, 2011, he was inducted into the office as Archbishop of Pretoria.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on April 30, 2019.
